We are Wisconsin proud to be Number One.

West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee have the biggest oxy and prescription opiate problems in the US, and Tennessee is, I believe, the third largest meth consumer — and biggest meth consumer per capita — in the US. So the map doesn’t really indicate sobriety.

"Which states drink a lot?"
Ask that question of an old Southern Baptist preacher in private. He'll provide the answer.

Of course Iowans binge drink. We’re too busy with work and church to drink more than once or twice a week, so we make the most of what few chances we get.

Great joke. I met my wife in Minnehoota and learned many Ole and Sven jokes there.
My fav:
Once Ole and Sven went to the big Fedjst to eat, drink, sing and dance.
They had a very good time and drank a lot.
Later Ole was looking for his wife, Lena, and was unable to find her anywhere.
Finally he went home and to his surprise he found Lena and Sven were in bed together!
Ole said: “Look at that Sven! He is so drunk, he thinks he is me!”

I think you’re on to something. The progressive and temperance movements do seem to be very intertwined.
