How should you pet your cat? Its a question thats stumped pet owners for centuries, but science now has an answer. Here's what a team of researchers from the University of Lincoln in the UK found, in graphical form:
Yes, thats right. Cats do not like being stroked at the base of their tail -- at least, that was the case for most of the 54 cats in this study, and another, smaller study on the topic. Thats sort of a cat erogenous zone, and petting may overstimulate it, the researchers posit.

Too much information!
I have one cat who loves to be “petted” like a bongo drum. Go figure.
Cats are weirdos.
I can vouch for the “erogenous zone” at the base of the tail. It creates a love/hate relationship really quickly.
Anyone who has ever served on the staff of a cat can tell you this without a scientific study.
Interesting
Concur. Dogs LIKE being petted. Endlessly. And they're grateful as well.
Mo' bettah.
Which is what makes them so awesome. Never a dull moment. (Cat owners are a little weird, too.)
“Its a question thats stumped pet owners for centuries,”
Really ????????????
.
My cat has been plotting against me.
From the article...”Cats do not like being stroked at the base of their tail...”
Another wasted study on cats. My cat completely agrees with the “Hell yes” section on your chart. She also enjoys a good belly rub.
My girlfriend's noisy Siamese cat loves having his belly scratched. He stands paralyzed while I do it. Sometimes he flops down on his back, and if I stop scratching his belly, he unsheathes his claws and literally forces my hand back into scratching position.
But then again, in my experience, Siamese cats love to be roughly manhandled.
Brings an urban legend to mind. Involves Raquel Welch appearing on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson....
That’s accurate.
They are, completely and utterly weird. My mother has 3 of them, one of them Trixie constantly constantly constantly wants to eat to the point where if you gave her unlimited food she would eat it until she puked and then continue eating and would puke again and continue eating again and again, she never ever stops and she never gets fat! The other one Fiona is like a deer, constantly scared running away to hide, you have to put the food under the bed or under a couch for her to eat, my mother calls her the “phantom cat” because you never see her, and the other one Ian constantly wants to get petted, it never ends, he sees someone coming he jumps on the table and hounds you until you pet him or climbs all over you if you sit down until you pet him. They’re all completely neurotic.
Thats sort of a cat erogenous zone, and petting may overstimulate it, the researchers posit. Here, kitty!
