Nick Lee, a dedicated programmer with access to WatchOS 2.0, has ported Mac OS 7.5.5 to his wrist. Thats right: the OS you used in the 1990s to make your zine can now boot albeit slowly on your Apple Watch. He used Mini VMac, an early Mac emulator, and recompiled it for the Watch.
Can the Watch actually run these sorts of programs well? Sure. The Watchs S1 chip is roughly equivalent to the iPhone 4Ss A5 chip which, as we well know, is plenty fast.
MacOS System 7.5.x shipped on ~100MHz PowerPC chips with ~24MB of RAM, a bit higher in the later models. So the Watch most certainly has more processing power, wrote Hacker News user MBurns.
Its an amazing hack and quite fun to see that bit of Mac OS nostalgia booting up on a lozenge of electronics about as big as the Return key on a 1991-era Power Mac. Now if we can just get the Apple Watch to run Doom

Hacker runs Apple MacOS 7.5.5 on the Apple Watch 2.0. . . Not too useful, but it runs. Now if they can just figure out how to connect a mouse to it! PING!

Thats 00:01:51 of my life that Ill never get back. Sometimes you just have to wonder WHY? Just because you can do something is there any value in doing it? As i said, if they could figure out how to get a mouse attached, THEN they might have something. . . but they'd need a microscope to appreciate what they'd have.

Very cool. Steve Jobs would probably enjoy the adaptation. I liked how the aliases appeared at the bottom of the screen as the OS was booting up. Yes, like the article says, I made many zines on 1990’s OS.

I can't imagine having to use Conflict Catcher on the Apple Watch to figure out what was causing something not to work right.
