Sunday, June 21, 2015: Windows 10 is the current hot topic of discussion among techies. Microsoft has already made it clear that Windows 10 upgrade will be absolutely free. The free upgrade will move you to the same edition of Windows that you are currently using. For example, if you are upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium, you will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home. However, you will have to pay to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.
here is a large base of users who are using unlicensed version of Windows. Some users are still running Windows XP or Vista on their machines. These users will not be applicable for the free upgrade. Did you ever wondered how much would it cost to install Windows 10 from scratch? Let’s figure out.
According to the upgrade chart published by Microsoft, Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium users will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home while, Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate users will get to experience Windows 10 Pro. Similarly, Windows 8.1 Users will get Windows 10 Home and Windows 8.1 Pro and Pro for Students users will receive Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft is also upgrading Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile. Some of the pro users who are somehow stuck with Windows 7/8.1 Home editions will not get to experience Pro version of Windows 10.
Windows 10 Pro Pack
According to the press release by Microsoft, there will be an upgrade package called Windows 10 Pro Pack which will allow users to upgrade from Windows 10 Home Edition to Pro edition. This pack will cost $99. Microsoft has priced the Pro Pack at premium price this time. In 2013, Windows 8 Pro edition upgrade was priced at just $39.99 for limited period.
Retail Package
Microsoft is also planning to sell MSRP copies of Windows 10. You can buy this license copy to install Windows 10 from scratch on your new machine. Anyone using Windows XP, Vista or machine that is not applicable for free upgrade will have to purchase the retail package to install Windows 10. Windows 10 Home edition will be priced at $119 while, the Pro edition will be sold at $199. With such pricing, it will be a challenge for Microsoft to acquire users for it’s latest operating system.
It happened to me. I had to call Dell Tech support who figured out the problem after an hour and sent the 8.1 upgrade to my computer.
Those of us who use Windows Media Player to play DVDs will have to find a replacement.

I’ve been following Win-10 since the first beta build. I loved it - it was quick to install, ran like a banshee, and didn’t look or act like Win-8.
The next build had problems (for me at least) with fonts and font rendering. I did like the Start menu well enough and most of the rest looked and felt like Win-7.
I’m on build 10074 right now and see that they went backwards with the Start menu - they made it look more like Win-8 (big stupid icons). The also eliminated the windows update link in the control panel. I no longer have any control over how and when I get updates. Being on a metered aircard, this sucks bigtime!
What is likely to happen is that Microsquish will make you an offer that (they feeeeeeel) you can’t refuse. They will stop providing support for whatever you are using in favor of whatever crap they want to foist on you.
As long as you have to start fresh you may want to explore Linux and Apple alternatives.

Anyone? No. My laptop was 8 and I updated to 8.1 with no problem as soon as it was available. I already had 8.1 on my desktop.

Virus or malware?
Windows 8 had a serious issue that made it susceptible to some of the security issues of the day (Heartbleed, I think?). They forced everyone to 8.1, because 8.0 was susceptible to a zero-day attack that they could not patch without the OS being hosed.

I might be totally wrong here but I had the impression that the upgrade was “free” but then they moved you to some sort of annual support free after the first year or something.
Companies love recurrent income streams way more than they like one time purchase fees - office is going this way as well.
Again I could be wrong but I think “Free” needs to be in quotation marks.

You can not update form 8 directly to 10. Form what I read at the from windows some windows 8 do not qualify to be updated. I can not even update to 8.1 because the way the installers purchased 8.
That is pure marketing "push".
Following that notification will allow you to "reserve" a free upgrade to Windows 10. As though it was something limited in quantity, LOL.
The "free" offer, for folks running Win 7 or Win 8.1, will be available for a full year starting release date July 29.
If you are running Windows 8.1, or God forbid 8.0, it's a good option. If you're running Win7 and like it, and have avoided Win8.x because of Metro, I would caution you about Win10 and suggest you sit back and watch for a few months after release.

I have 8.1 on my desktop and never see Metro unless I accidentally hit the windows key.
OTOH, my wife on her laptop enjoys using the apps.
We like having one OS that serves two purposes.
May I suggest VLC Media Player from videolan.org?
Have never found an audio or video format that VLC could not play.

You post this same on all the MS threads. Own up to the installer of your software and get it fixed or STFU!
I spent a couple hours on it today to find out they will not upgrade.

You are truly a disrupter. That has nothing to do with upgrades to the consumer.
I can't update I found out today with the help of several here. My windows 8 is limited and part of a group they will no upgrade. I wonder if running anti-virus daily will be enough to stop the problem.
