Good flick. It's perhaps not quite as edgy a film as it was in 1955, as the subject of drug addiction is no longer a taboo, but it's still a very good flick. Darren McGavin plays a good creep, and this is the first film where I've gotten to enjoy the antics of the legendary goofball Arnold Stang. 7.25/10

I always liked Elmer Bernstein’s jazzy music score for this film.

Author of the book was Nelson Algren, a Chicagoan. I met him not long before he died at a talk, and he signed my book of his short stories: The Last Carousel. My dad went to DePaul, 1930s, and he always claimed Algren captured his world perfectly.

I seem to recall having read somewhere that Algren later stated (admitted / boasted) that he, in fact, had had no first-hand knowledge of the drug milieu; that he had researched it thoroughly, but only from secondary sources.

Arnold Stang gives a notable performance in the film.

What you say may be true. I was referring to the characters Algren created. According to my Dad, right off the streets of the north and west side streets of Chicago to a tee.

Great flick in many ways but most notable because of its terrifying vision of drug addiction.

Great movie? No. Great, if not greatest, score. “High Noon”, a close second.

“Whoa—WHOA! Evil Roy Slade?”

Isn’t it just the best? I used to look forward to watching it whenever it would be a movie special on tv (this was in the days before having cable, of course). I still crack up when I watch it today. John Astin is just a hoot!

It’s out on DVD now, btw. You can pick it up at Amazon for like 7 bucks.
