Weird Stuff In Black and White TV Shows [vanity]

Doctors smoke.

Drivers get into cars on the passenger side and slides across the front seat instead of walking around. Exception: A male driver with a female passenger. They both get in on the drivers' side. She gets in first but only slides halfway across.

Cops shoot fleeing unarmed suspects. If a civilian is shot during a pursuit, the cop doesn't bother stopping to render aid or call an ambulance; they keep chasing the suspect (of course, assumed to be guilty).

To make sure everyone knows his or her place, formal and familiar modes of address (and reference) are rigidly used.

Black people are always servants and servile (except on Amos 'n' Andy).

When "stuff" happens, women scream. A guy has to handle it for them.

Busy signals.

Convertibles with the top down in apparently cold weather (people bundled up or wearing heavy coats and hats).

Western marshals don't make arrests; they have duels with bad guys and given them the chance to draw and fire first. Cops aren't much better; they approach armed suspects without drawing a weapon, allowing the suspect fire at them so they can have a dramatic shoot-out.

Despite the fact that Roman Catholics are less than a quarter of the US population, about 90 per cent of TV clergy are priests.

You seldom see a TV in the homes of TV families.

It only takes a quick kiss or peck on the lips to make teenage boys happy.

TV homes have table radios with future technology (they don't need to warm up). And when turned on, a news story or announcement relevant to the plot is heard immediately.

Doctors make house calls. Nobody worries about the cost of health care.

Wives are younger and better looking than their husbands.

Women can't walk by themselves; guys must grab an elbow and steer them.

Bathrooms don't have toilets.

People drink coffee with every meal. (You'd think they'd need those toilets.)

Any others?

A little off topic, but one of my favorite Hitchcock episodes was about a woman who killed her husband with a frozen roast. Before the police came, she put the roast in the oven. When it was done, she invited the detectives to have dinner with her.

Essentially, they ate the murder weapon.

Speaking of The Fugitive – the guy is on a desperate run from the law but always has current ID and is nicely attired, as well as clean-shaven.

Looks like he's getting his three squares every day, too.

I knew Batman was in color because it said so at the bottom of the screen.

And with all the evils of segregation, the black family unit was more intact, male black lifespan was longer, a black person was less likely to be assaulted and murdered, and the black literacy rate was far higher than it is today.

The black marriage and legitimacy rates were much, much higher also.

How about simply saying things have changed, some for the better and some for the worse?

Which era would you consider a better time to raise a teen daughter?

"...The stories sucked. The morality was “make-believe.” The society was really racist, segregated, and our products pretty much sucked but it didn’t matter because the rest of the world was still digging themselves out of the rubble of WWII..."

I get it now.

But if you hate America so much, why are you on Freerepublic?

We tend to value those things that you disdain.

And actual racial hatred was far lower than what we have today, hands down.

"...I saw an old "Alfred Hitchcock" episode in which a woman was broiling a big, sizzling steak for dinner...."

I always wonder what their food was like, being produced/raised grown so differently than today.

Beef, for instance, would possess a lot less antibiotics and would be raised on a slightly different diet, and a chicken took twice as long to grow into an adult back then.

catherine....

I really dont mean to pee in anyone’s cornflakes. Really.

The US today is still a great place. Think about where you live and the people around you. People that you actually know.

Are they really that different? I live in a town next to the “most dangerous city in America.” (A recent survey labelled it so.) We live on nice streets. Our lawns are mowed, and our houses are clean. The schools are great. I know my neighbors. We help each other out. We are welcoming to newcomers.

It is so much like the street I lived on as a kid—nice suburb of the same city.

My America is full of contributors. In my America, the kids might not be as successful as their parents, because the parents are so successful. But many of them are going to give us a run for our money.

Sure, if you turn on the TV you see news that is not nice. But that’s the news—stuff that is out of the ordinary.

Do I ever get nostalgic for my youth? Sure...but I think about my youth. Not some fairyland that was presented from Walt Disney’s mind. I think of my friends and the times we had.

In my youth, and I am not much older than you (54), I had several friends raped by priests. I had a friend murdered—probably by someone associated with the church—its still unsolved. I lost friends parents to the Vietnam war when their locally based bombers were shot down. I was in junior high when race riots tore through our city. My sister was caught up in busses being tipped over and lines of riot cops in front of her high school.

So, compared to my youth, today—in my town and the life of my kids (now 22 and 25) is a paradise compared to where and when I grew up.

I like to think forward. Not back. And while its fun to remember the Good ole days...remember ALL of the good ole days if you are being generic. If you are remembering YOUR youth, have at it. The early to late 60’s were not all that great, moral, or encouraging to all of us.

Nobody ever has time to finish their meal at the table.

Nobody ever has to count out their money when paying for things. They just throw money and leave.

“I get tired of the old folks on this site pining for the good ole days.”

Who you callin’ old?

Seriously, I suppose every era has had good and bad. I don't know that this old broad wants to go back in time necessarily, but I would like to see positive elements of life years ago reintroduced to this generation. Things like more stable families, morality, ethics and decency, far less governmental intrusion in our lives and schools where a child learned something useful instead of being indoctrinated. We've lost all of that and I'd like to have government leaders who would bring it all back without worrying about “offending” these whiny special classes.

I dont hate America. I love America.

I am on free republic because I enjoy conservative values and discussion.

It doesn’t mean that I think everything about America was the best, or is the best. We have done a lot of things wrong. We continue to do things wrong.

One of the conservative values that patriots should share is the elimination of blind loyalty to systems and organizations that might have been wonderful at one time, but no longer are.

For example, our government is corrupt and ineffective. We should work to change that to represent the morals and cultural values of the people. That isn’t happening.

Our manufacturing is just about gone. But, if you look objectively at the mistakes we made back in the times you laud, you can see the beginning of our decline. Shoddy quality, the reliance on big labor, and the selling out of our trade values.

Our military, once held in awe around the world for their intentional policy of “win and go home” got swept up in the “military industrial complex.” Instead of our manufacturing base being used to produce cars, technology, and things for our own betterment, we built planes, missiles, and other things we did not need, from money we did not have, to sell to countries that would ultimately use them against us.

And once the “cold war” stopped, we continued to maintain a military policy that did not change with the times.

Do not get me wrong: I am for a strong defense. I love the military commitment and those who serve. What I don’t like is how the government has used those men and material.

I love God. I am a moral person. But, I also remember a lot of immorality back in those days as well. I recall no one “talking about” the crap that went on in homes, offices, and parishes.

Do I like the escapism, drug and thug culture of today? Of course not. I think the government has done everything it could to funnel every dime it could to the Industrial Poor Economy—those are the folks who make money through the Agencies who are supposed to be giving people a hand up. If you think the lazy poor people make money for nothing, take a look at the grants, government programs, and businesses that thrive like a sucker fish off the body of America.

No, I love America. I think America can have some great days ahead. I think fiscal conservatism is long overdue. But we cannot do that without cutting military budgets, social programs, and farm subsidies. We all need to back away from the teat. That that will hurt everyone.

But no one wants to hear that either.

I guess you can say I am ranting. But you are the one that suggested I disdain what you look back and long for. I simply disagree that “those were the days.”

I think tomorrow are the “days” for America. And if more people could focus on that; work towards that; and make the necessary changes in their personal and professional lives, we could make it work.

But it won’t happen.

Without American Exceptionalism there is no America. The liberals are killing it while we stand by and let it happen.

I would love to see a return to that as well.

But how many folks in your family are divorced? My brother and sister are. Do we judge them? Were they ostracized?

Nope.

I compare their children to mine, coming from a home of 30 years of marriage. Mine beat them in every category. But that is 2 of mine, vs three of theirs. We are going to slowly lose this battle.

Everyone is too easily offended these days.

My point is is that we should be standing up for our ethics, our morals, and our country. Today. Not pining for a world on TV that was just as fake in 1965 as it is today.

I used to love Hogan’s Heroes. Funny show. Fun guys. Reminded me of the guys that hung out at the legion with my dad. You know, the guys that were going to the Legion hall every night for a drink before they went home. The same guys who had mental issues from being put through such horrors as teenagers and early adulthood that I cannot imagine.

I guess that’s my point when I see these “It was so good back then” posts.

Yeah, that was probably hyperbole.

But do you think its not true? Not the part that I “hate” them. Because I don’t.

But the part where they are AARP eligible and they are white. I think we can all agree that is a slam dunk. :-)
