Yesterday, at a neighbor's house, his 4th grade daughter read something very well and I asked her what grade she was in and complimented her on her reading .....

I'm tired of little, silent flys ...

I'm lookin' for loud mouthed mamas and papas that are pissed off

BTW ... there ARE a few and more showing up every month .....

I'm REALLY enjoying this RIGHTEOUS 60's radical activity

Protests that are real and actually MEAN something.

AND .... I'm an elected official ... no one can touch me ... except the threat of the ACLU on the school .... which they HAVE intimidated me in the past, but we have a budget coming up I will refuse because it is dependent on the commie Gov we have (Wolfe, PA) and HE hasn't a budget yet

I will NOT ALLOW a vote for something to pass to see what's in it ... BRING the ACLU ... let's get it ON.

I taught my daughter phonics when she was little. She could read by age two. This was when phonics started to be dropped in place of whole word recognition, and I wanted to make sure she could read.

Heh ... we homeschooled 4 kids before my first wife went home to be with the LORD and I have serious thoughts about gummint indoctrination centers ...

It's a whole story, but I believe God put me here for a reason ....

This week I'm in Nehamiah (or as they say in Texas, knee ah miar) and I relate to the tool in one hand and weapon in the other .. teaching.

my two kids went to montessori school where each child had a task to perform which made them responsible and productive in the group and eager to learn. my son proudly announced he was the “garbage man”.. oh excuse me that is english for libtard “sanitary engineer”...
they could read and write in pre-school and they coasted in public school for the first 5 grades.....

Good for You.

They would toss Me in Jail if I were there, because they can't handle the Truth.

If I had Kids they would only see the Public System driving by going somewhere because they would be Home Schooled in the Constitution. REAL American History then World History. Math made to make sense (I hated Math until I worked in the Water Plant- THEN it All made perfect sense when put to REAL USE. Geography and Map use. Firearms and Survival Training. Medical Treatment. Food Acquisition, Preservation and Preparation. Mechanics. Domestic Engineering: Laundry/Sewing/etc. FReeping

And of course waiting on Mom and Dad's every need;)

The same thing happens with sounds I think. When you first send and receive Morse Code, you struggle a letter at a time...years later you are sending and receiving whole words and word groups, not even thinking about the letters. Learning a language..,same. With learning rapid Spanish, you’ll miss words, but the thought is clear to you. A mind is an interesting thing to have, too bad some have lost theirs.

My grandbabies (they will always be babies to me!), two out of three so far, are reading in kindergarten. Next one is only three but he's well on his way recognizing two and three letter words right away. I know that's not the point of your post, but I just think it's amazing they are reading so young and I hope to help make a lifetime joy of it for them.

do I read it automatically because I can reason the word pattern ?

Yes. "Reason" being the key here.

Whole language (look-say) was developed because educators observed adults reading and noticed that they did not sound out words, but simply recognized them by sight.

They then drew the absurd conclusion that children could therefore do the same thus skipping the messy business of learning letters and the sounds they represent.

But the first several times one encounters a new word, it must be "sounded out". Over time, the process is automatized and the word recognized on sight.

Yes, I don’t think this is useful for reading comprehension, just for word identification.

In the case of the road sign, it isn’t that important that the reader be able to pronounce the word or even understand it, only to match it with their destination. If I headed to Pont Neuf, I don’t need to know what it means, only that I should follow signs bearing Pont Neuf.

If they are using that method for learning to read, I would think there would be several problems, chief of which is that vocabulary would have to be learned one “sight-word” at a time.

I would bet there aren’t any sight-word learners among the Scripps Spelling Bee contestants.
