"First off, I cant stress this enough on how dangerous this weapon is. And yes, that is a weapon. Why? The threshold to cause permanent blindness in a person is 1 milliwatt. This laser is 40 watts total power. That is 40,000 milliwatts. Your blink reflex will not save you at that power level. You could be a long way from that weapon and still be permanently blinded. That's more dangerous in a lot of circumstances than a sword or a gun.
Secondly, "glasses" will not help you with this type of laser. What professionals use are filters that are set to a specific wavelength to block the light of the specific laser they are working with. If you don't use these properly with a weapon of that power, you could suffer serious eyesight issues even if you don't point it directly at someone's eye.
And for the love of god, if you are going to buy one of these use the proper eye protection, use them indoors, and do not point them at aircraft or you will have some serious trouble at your doorstep.

That's something I just wouldn't mess with. Prolly end up blinding myself or someone else!
In short, someone has to know a LOT about lasers and laser safety before he should even think about building that thing, imo, (and I'm not really sure this kid has all the knowledge he should have - he admits he's a little scared, which I doubt real physicists or engineers in a professional R&D environment worry about).

Toy. Real men build 40W phased plasma.
This little thing is fine for shooting balloons I’ll grant you/ But will it stop a T800 or an Alien?
Thought not.

He may be saying that to.emphasize just how dangerous it is.
He can’t be that unknowledgable about it if he was able to build it.

There are a lot of things that I could build, but I wont. A prudent man does not look for trouble. However when I was young, lets just say that I had to pay for a lot of lab equipment. Sometimes knowledge is power, sometimes it is just dangerous. One of my friends is into splicing and dicing DNA, scared the hell out of me what he is doing. Some very knowledgeable scientists are doing creepy and dangerous experiments. It is exciting, a 40W laser would be fun to play with. Heck, hold my beer. What could go wrong?
