Had the chance to talk to Ruffian’s trainer - Frank Whiteley - about the race. He said that he never got over it. He never wanted to run her.

2nd best to Secretariat's record of 2:26, American Pharoah time was 2:26 3/5.

Secretariat's time was 2:24:00

Whether ultimately it works out or not, you must do it that way. Imagine if you lagged back with an opportunity like that and then ran into trouble from another horse. You'd never forgive yourself.

That was my CYA in case someone complained about the spelling — the name of the horse was deliberately misspelled by the owner.

Figured so. By the way my understanding is the name was a contest entry that was sent in as an official registration without the owner noting the error.

Maybe the name should be pronounced “American PhaRowAh”. All that aside, a great horse and a fabulous race!

Since it’s a good day to talk horses, a jog of the memory led to a web search, which led to this nice piece:

more detail about Hoist the Flag’s injury and the surgery that saved him and made his offspring possible:

Regarding Northern Dancer:
http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2014-05-14/sports/bs-sp-northern-dancer-20140514_1_california-chrome-pimlico-race-course-native-dancer

[In 2014] for the first time, every Derby starter — 19 in all — bore bloodlines that trace back to the homely half-pint whose libido far exceeded his looks... His record Derby time (two minutes) stood until broken by Secretariat in 1973.

http://www.hitechbloodstock.com/northern_dancer.htm

Northern Dancer sired 635 foals: of the 488 that started in races, 368 were winners of which 146 were stakes winners. 26 of theses animals were champions in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, The US and Canada... He died in 1990 at the age of 29.

Am not a race follower, but I noticed faster times in 1893 and 1894. Did they change the race?

From wiki ... "The Belmont Stakes was run at a mile and five furlongs from 1867 to 1873; a mile and a half from 1874 to 1889; a mile and a quarter in 1890, 1891, 1892, 1895, 1904 and 1905; a mile and a furlong in 1893 and 1894; a mile and three furlongs from 1896 to 1903 and from 1906 to 1925. The current distance of a mile and half was established in 1926"

A furlong is 1/8 mile.
