A fan whose head was bloodied by a broken bat that flew into the stands at Fenway Park was in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
The game between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox was halted in the middle of the second inning Friday as emergency crews tended to the woman and wheeled her off the field on a stretcher.
Oakland's Brett Lawrie broke his bat on a groundout to second base for the second out of the inning and part of it hurtled into the stands. Boston police spokesman David Estrada confirmed the woman was seriously injured.
She was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Hospital in Boston. Hospital spokeswoman Kelly Lawman said she is still gathering information regarding the woman's condition and identity on Saturday morning and hopes to have more information later in the day.
Alex Merlis, of Brookline, Massachusetts, said he was sitting in the row behind the woman when the broken bat flew into the seats just a few rows from the field between home plate and the third base dugout.

Hope she is okay, I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often.
A few years ago, broken bats were much more common. I believe MLB regulates bats more closely now.
They’re too expensive for me. You’re easily out $100 bucks.
Ouch!
Maybe they should switch to aluminum bats. (For the children)
It helps if you have a winning team.
There must be lots of other things to do in Tampa Bay.
Time to put up NASCAR fenced around the entire stadium.
We must have greatly improved Bat Control at once. AT ONCE, DO YOU HEAR!
(We even allow children to “play” with bats! Shameful.)
I attended a game there in ‘07 when they were still the doormat of MLB. I even had my Cleveland Indians cap on and no one said anything.
Astros’ on-field success hasn’t been noticed judging by attendance, which is the same 22,000 per game as last year.
That's what I always figured with games like the Super Bowl. Why pay thousands of dollars to go to the game. With a good Hi-Def TV, the cameras provide views that are closer than even the best seats in a stadium, especially with those wire mounted cameras that can float over the playing field. I mean you can see the stitching on the uniforms; how much closer can one get!
Wear a Chief Wahoo hat in L A and people just figure you’re a gangbanger.
Like a bat out of H*ll!
In my opinion, oversaturation is a problem. Too many teams playing a season that is too long.
There are 5 teams in California 2 AL and 3 NL. They should go back to scheduled double headers on weekends to shorten the season.
I’m the same with NASCAR. I live withing hearing distance of Michigan international speedway but prefer to watch the race on TV.
Houston has one of the best teams in the league.
