How Ben Stein Came to Deliver a Lecture in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
American Prowler ^

Today is both #FlashbackFriday and, according to Chicago's WGN network, the 30th anniversary of Ferris Bueller's quintessential "day off." Apparently, they figured this out not by determining the date of the Von Steuben day parade (that's actually in September), but by the date of the Chicago Cubs game Ferris and company attend as part of their Chicago adventure.

To celebrate at the Spectator, you can do a little #FlashbackFriday of your own. A few months ago, our very own Ben Stein, who delivers an iconic attendance roll (and lecture on the Laffer Curve to a classroom of sleepy kids), detailed in an essay how he came to be Bueller's least-favorite teacher.

Then, I went on stage to do a voiceover–not on camera–of my taking the roll. “Adams, Adamley, Adamowski, Bueller, Bueller, Bueller, Bueller…” The high school age extras screamed with laughter and so did John.

He is another fake conservative.

More of a Libertarian. On economics, he is pretty conservative.

To me, that scene is what school is all about, Charlie Brown. Soul-crushing boredom. Few of us escape unscathed, whether we know it or not.

Well, except for a correct explanation of the Laffer Curve. That, of course, is an absurdity.

Stein endorsed Al Franken, despised Palin, and is no conservative.

Look at his history, his bizarre moves left have been discussed here since he started going nuts.

He’s strongly pro-life. I think I remember reading him say those were the most important issues in the last election.

I know he isn’t some conservative stalwart. It’s a light hearted post about a small role in a John Hughes flick. I was joking in reference to your enjoying arguing.

No, but he makes a point to do it to someone else.

Agree, but more on form than substance.
His writing is about as exciting as his speaking style, but more lachrymose. One more article about his Mother ...
He’s one of the (lesser) reasons I dropped whatever magazine he wrote for, American Spectator. Too depressing.
Doesn’t surprise me to hear you say he’s a moderate squish `taint.

Ben's original article is here:

Love Is Strange

John Hughes had heard Ben speak, and loved the voice. It was the "perfect teacher's voice".

Stein was supposed to just call the roll, off-screen.... kinda like the teacher in numerous Peanut's specials: "Wah wah wah waaaaah". But, he ended up doing a scene on-camera.

His lesson about the Laffer curve was completely ad-libbed, but he wrote that the "Anyone? Anyone?" was copied from a high school teacher he had observed earlier.

I subscribed to American spectator during the 90s and enjoyed his column, but like so many rinos like him, Peggy Noonan, Powell, and others, Palin entering the picture, brought out the truth of what he really is.

Ben Stein endorsed and donated to Al Franken, in 2008, as he was ranting against the Palin ticket.

Ben Stein - famous for his role in the ‘80s movie classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and his political/economic commentary - took to the pages of the Alaska Dispatch to blast Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller, calling him a “dangerous, stupid clown.”

“Ben Stein Blames ‘Excessive Tax Cuts’ & ‘Voodoo Economics’ for Deficit “

“Taking Stock (Ben Stein says Reagan’s tax cuts caused recession)”

Rather than troll, by jumping on a thread only to insult someone, why not challenge some fact that I have posted on the rino?

I agree with you about him being very wishy washy.

I used to be a very die hard fan of his in the American Spectator was very suddenly for no discernible reason he began speaking in a very liberal way for some years.

It completely shocked and mystified me and I stopped reading him.

It is really incredible just how much mileage he has managed to wrangle out of his role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

He is another fake conservative.

Yep, the entire party is filled with them. There's not a damn single one of them who agrees with everything and every policy I support!

Rumor has it that Jesus is going to return and run for office. Sorry Jesus, your free bread and fish for the 5,000 ultimately lead to our food stamp welfare system.........../s
