Feminist Germaine Greer: Motherhood Has ‘Been Deconstructed…It’s Gone’

Feminist theorist and author Germaine Greer said that the concept of motherhood has been “emptied out” and is “gone” in a lecture on women’s progress at the Hay Literary Festival in Wales on May 23.

The outspoken Australian feminist, who once compared motherhood to captivity, critiqued the “concept” of motherhood at a time in which in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become increasingly popular. […]

Greer also voiced her disapproval of singer/songwriter Elton John naming his same-sex “wife” David Furnish as the “mother” on their sons’ birth certificates.

“Sir Elton John and his ‘wife,’ David Furnish, have entered on the birth certificates of their two sons [that] David Furnish is the mother…That’ll give you an idea of how the concept of ‘motherhood’ is emptied out. It’s gone. It’s been deconstructed,” the 76-year-old Greer said. …

It isn’t usually the case that when a delusional nutcase attains the top political position in a country, said nutcase appoints non-delusional non-nutcases to serve him.

Sorry, dear, motherhood isn’t a social construct. If it were we wouldn’t see its characteristics spread all across the biological continuum. It was always a case of colossal vanity that anyone ever thought they could “deconstruct” it in the first place.

> Germaine is one of the most intelligent feminists on the scene. Has she been wrong in the past? Yes. Is she right on this? YES! I’ve read what she has to say on this subject and she is on target. She matches up with conservatives and some radical feminists who know that this is a major part of the war on women.

Sorry but she doesn’t speak for all women. 97 % of them would disagree privately if they were honest with themselves but only few would voice it. Human nature disagrees with the feminist wholeheartedly.

Think about the identity of the being that projected this vanity into human minds in the first place.

Who is talking about statistics? She is suggesting that Elton John’s boyfriend is not “a mother,” ok? Is that so hard to agree with? I’m outraged at gay men destroying women and I know that many in the feminist community agree with me - although a lot of them are obviously cowed into silence. Greer has never been afraid of an unpopular opinion.

You think his appointees are non-delusional? Have you been in DC lately?

The whole place is one insane asylum.

One thing I like, when I go about, to the store or wherever, is seeing young mothers with their children.

What I like is the pure joy one can see in their faces and how they carry their bodies as they go about their affairs of the day, kids in tow or being pushed in a stroller.

The happiness peace and joy is so apparent.

Let anyone tell these women motherhood is over or meaningless or deconstructed or whatever dumb phrase they want to use.

Fine. You admire the “mother” of Elton John’s purchased children.

The danger we face is not that people like this idiot liberal are wrong...but sometimes they might get it almost right trying to play in whatever court of appeal that pertains to thier moments of “enlightenment”....and that fools would then jump on their bandwagon...and do.

There was an obviously exhausted but happy young mother before me in the checkout line the other day wrangling five little boys. When I congratulated her she beamed. A woman like that is a hero.

LOL!!

Germaine, sweetie, I have two dogs and six cats who all receive exceptional mothering because I can not have children. Instead, I ‘mother’ my pets.

When I was awarded custody of my nephew due to his parents lives of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll the mothering didn’t work. He had already been brainwashed into believing me ‘evil’, the doings of his sick, addicted parents (he recently admitted that, thanks to Narcotics Addiction [NA] meetings) and I am hoping he turns around his compulsive behavior before he self-destructs. Meanwhile, I will be available for him, always.

The fool is someone who doesn’t recognize utilizing what is good and kicking to the curb that which is bad.

I didn’t say anything of the sort. I don’t admire any feminists. They are usuallt mentally disturbed individuals with serious daddy issues.

As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’

Well, without John Stuart Mill and the 19th century and early 20th century feminists, we’d be living in a very sad world for women. So, no, not all feminists are mentally disturbed. And Greer is right on this issue. I don’t think one person here has actually read what she said.

Does one really need to read what a feminist has to say, really?

Re-read what I posted. I said it is not the case that delusional tyrants appoint non-delusional people as aides and counselors.

I’ll read anyone who has an interesting point of view. And I’ve read Greer for years.

It seems to me that when people who were wrong finally get things right, it is time to rejoice. I think of people like Dr. Bernard Nathanson who was at the forefront of promoting abortion. He finally saw the truth and repented and worked to fight against the movement he a started. I think of Norma Jane McCorvey, the Roe of Roe V Wade who too saw the truth and switched sides. I think of David Horrowitz who was a radical leftist but who finally acknowledged the truth and became a defender of the Constitution. I think of Saul of Tarsus who zealously persecuted the early Church. He changed and became the apostle Paul, a leader of the Church, spreading the good news of Jesus to many countries. That Germaine Greer finally sees through the lies she has believed and perpetuated in the past is a good thing! I can't believe all the freepers now attacking her. I wish her well in her efforts to speak out.
