A recycling facility in Silicon Valley is trying to trace a woman who dumped a rare Apple 1 computer, which just sold to a private collector for $200,000.
The company wants to give her a cut of the proceeds: $100,000.
The firm CleanBayArea said the woman dropped off boxes of old gadgets and e-waste one month ago, but didnt leave any contact information.
She said that her husband had passed away and that she had decided to clean up their garage, the company said in a statement.
After searching through the boxes a few weeks later, a recycling manager found the collectors item and arranged for a sale.
Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak famously created the Apple 1 the firms first desktop computer in Jobs family garage in 1976.
About 200 Apple 1s were built, and roughly 50 are believed to still exist most of them not in working order.

Sounds pretty fair to me. Can I dump my old IBM Windows 98 ME for any collectors cash?

I still have my first computer: A Royal 8-bit with two 5.25" floppy drives and with a 12" gold character screen that uses "Peachtree" software (c. 1983).
Still have the daisywheel printer, too. Wrote my 2 grad school theses on this thing, back when you still had to submit your work as originally typed work on 25% cotton bond.
Wonder if it's worth anything ....

I wonder how they are going to verify her identity? No telling how many grifters are going to show up and claim they made the donation.

The donor will probably sue for the whole 200k. No good deed goes unpunished.

Valuable computers are a rarity. Much more common is the case of a widow selling her late husband's guns for far less than they're worth, or worse yet, turning them in to a "gun buyback." Be sure your wife knows how valuable they are.

Be sure your wife knows how valuable they are. I always remind my wife that not all my possessions are junk. Two items side by side might seem similar, but one could be worth $25 and the other $5000. I created a database with estimated values just so she won't make mistakes on selling stuff after I die. She's always after me to reduce the amount of stuff I own, but she'll remember that I tell her there's money in that pile of "junk". For instance, early motherboards in the low 100's serial numbers versus others much higher. Guys - label your stuff so she can identify its worth!
