Police say a 15-year-old baseball player has died after being struck by a ball in the northern Minnesota city of Bemidji.
snip
Police say Zacharie was pitching and was struck by a ball that a batter hit. He died later at a hospital.
I must have been hit in the head. Got hit in the back once and it was extremely painful. when I pitched getting hit by a ball was always in the back of my mind. I did catch one that was aimed straight at my face
ones as a lighty i had put my finger in a plague of the wall i had a shock but not death
Language what you is of speaking of? Non possible comprehension. Truly bad.
“Zacharie was pitching and was struck by a ball that a batter hit”
Poor kid. I can still remember my older brother getting plowed in the eye the same way when I was really little. My brother recovered completely, fortunately. But it was a scary, scary event. The ball cracked his eye socket, and for a time we were fearful he’d lose use of the eye.
RIP to this young man.
Obviously English is not his native tongue. But I’m sure better than I can speak with other languages.
I’m guessing he means “plug” as in electrical outlet instead of “socket”. Not quite there but close.
And he doesn’t capitalize “I” when he should.
Perhaps French ? The name he is using is that of a famous (and deceased) French mercenary.
Dreadful. Poor kid. RIP.
A heart attack is the more likely cause. Although rare, a ball strike in the chest can trigger a heart attack if it occurs near the heart and at a vulnerable moment in the heart’s cycle of circulation.
The poor kid is actually from Iowa (was staying with his Grandparents up in MN to play with his former team for the Summer as he just moved here last Fall). A couple of the local news stories mention a neurologist and aneurysm;
he did make it to the hospital and died later...make of that what you will.
Not too many details at the moment other than a little bit of info his Mom gave to the Des Moines Register.
Freak accident; so sad...sounded like a talented youngster.
interesting. I didn’t know that
unfortunately, this happens in lacrosse as well.
Very very sad.
I remember when I was young boy playing in my first Little League game, the coach put me on third base because I had no clue what I was doing.
The other team soon realized this and I have a vague memory of scowls at me from the batters as they drilled balls in my direction.
Finally there was the most excruciating pain in my glove hand. I had no idea what happened until the coach came out and took the ball out of my glove.
It must have been a big out because the whole team was really happy.
So can it be said that baseball is deadlier than football, boxing and MMA at this point?
This is not the first time I have heard of a person dying being struck by a baseball, yet I don’t hear anything at all about how dangerous a sport it is, or that they should wear helmets or chest pieces to protect against this type of thing, and I find that most curious.
I used to coach HS ball and always tried to finish my delivery so that I was ready to take what came back.
Of course, I was only pitching maybe 55 or so, where even in high school kids can pitch in the mid 70s, and thus some finish off balance.
It’s risky to be sure. But I’ll never forget the thrill of being 60+ pitching to high schoolers.
RIP Zacharie.
Sad for the batter as well. Prayers for the batter and the deceased’s family
A brain aneurysm is usually due not to injury but to a weakness in the wall of an artery.
They are exploring whether he had an underlying condition that may have caused it...but getting hit in the head or neck by a baseball at that close distance could certainly CAUSE a weakness in the wall of an artery that would lead to death.
He made it to the local hospital, and was even life-flighted to a trauma center. Given the fact that he made it there, and then died suddenly, that's probably exactly what happened...an artery was damaged and then burst. I'm no "brain surgeon"...but the Doctor that told his Mother that actually IS...so I think I'll go with his opinion as opposed to yours.
When I played little league our coach brought a kid from the Babe Ruth division to a practice to pitch to us. He wanted us to hit fast balls.
Well, none of us kids could catch his pitches so the coach put on a mask and pulled up a cinder block behind the plate.(The strike zone for little leaguers is pretty low and he couldn’t stay in such a low crouch for long.) He sat down on that cinder block and was trying to tell us how to anticipate the ball and swing into the motion of the pitcher.
He should have worn a cup.
A low fast ball was tipped by the batter, popped off the plate and bounced right into the cinder block where his marbles dallied. He was still howling when the ambulance closed the door. Four games later he came by on crutches to wish us luck.
Pitchers probably should wear a mask.
I lost a cousin over 60 years ago playing sand lot baseball. He was hit in the head by a pitch, went home with a headache, died three days later from a cerebral hemorrhage.
