Brandon Bostian, crashed Amtrak train's engineer, reportedly ranted about safety: 'I wish the railroads had been more proactive'

The engineer who was behind the controls of an Amtrak train that derailed going around a curve at 100 mph is a lifelong train buff who's written online about the need for better rail safety, it was reported Thursday.

Brandon Bostian, writing on website Trainorders.com, criticized railroads for not installing "positive train control" systems to prevent crashes, the New York Times reported.

"At any point over the previous EIGHTY years the railroad could have voluntarily implemented some form of this technology," Bostian wrote in 2011, according to the Times. "I wish the railroads had been more proactive in adopting active signaling systems from the get-go."

Perhaps, but most parents can’t supervise children every single minute. There will be times when everyone has to hire a babysitter, or get a relative/friend to watch them, send them to daycare, school, a church function, etc. We have to, at some point, trust other adults to act as our proxies and not abuse the children we trust them with.

Unfortunately, not all adults are trustworthy like that.

Google is a for-profit business. There is a demand for cars, but there is little demand for passenger trains, because they aren’t usually a viable business model.

Amtrak has been in the red, like the USPS, for years.

An engineer, with a blog, rants about train safety, and then, by chance/design/intent takes a 50 mph train around a 50 mph curve, at 100 mph, willfully, to make his point.

He should be tried for murder; for sabotage, since Amtrak is a federal operation.

It’s not the railroads, as this thing is currently set forth. In fact they just have to pay for it. Can you say unfunded mandate. No tax subsidy here.

Now, the folks who make the equipment will be in better shape, at the railroads’ expense.

Ideally, if the train is about to cross the speed limit, the system will automatically apply the train’s brakes (and maybe also disengage engine power).

As envisioned it is a grand scheme indeed. When under full PTC governance the train is running in a “Mother may I” mode. If the computer systems on board are not totally assured that track and train conditions are OK for the train to proceed, the train will brake.

The known dangers are so small — modern trains have such a good safety record — that this is known to be vast financial overkill.

Strictly my own opinion, but after his complaining like that and then doing something like this, it IS kind of hard to ignore... what will actually politically happen is anyone’s guess, we know how the people eat up the liberal news sound bites. The technology isn’t even close to being able to handle it by the end of this year. The USSR was not able to dictate a market, and the Congress can’t dictate the existence of a technology.

Amtrak runs on the actual money-making railroads’ tracks as a guest. Think BNSF, UPRR, etc. These railroads are being ordered to furnish the infrastructure.

this crash happened right before the transportation and housing bill vote where gee whiz Democraps added the "positive train control" amendment.

You may be on to something but this murderer should haven't been going twice the speed limit.

Well, everyone begins headed the same way, and it ain’t up.

The bible says God hates ALL sinners. It is only by His grace they aren’t already in hell. A peek at a mirror is helpful when addressing such topics.

We haven’t even established that this fellow was actually catching for the wrong team. A lot of liberals are for the weird idea du jour.
