Which of these 20 FREAKY FRUITS have you eaten and how did they taste. My inner Andrew Zimmern wants to try them out. The one fruit on the list that I know for sure that I tried is the Pummelo which is like a giant grapefruit and tastes similar to one.
Mangosteens, when fresh, are sweet and citrusy ... “bright”, if that makes any sense as a flavor.
Purple sweet potato and passion fruit. I do not remember how the purple sweet potato tasted other than it was fine. Passion fruit is absolutely delicious. How do you describe a taste?
Durian smells and tastes like onion to me.
Durian smells atrocious, but I found the taste sublime. Texture is like brie, and for me the taste was like a cross between carmelized onion and cheesecake (in a good way).
Saw #1, the Horned Melon, at Sprouts the other day. My oldest and I were wondering about it, so I pulled up this link/description on my phone so we could find out about it:
http://communitytable.com/64398/linzlowe/what-the-heck-is-a-kiwano-melon-and-how-do-you-eat-it/
The kiwano may look like a fruit from outer space (and in fact, it featured in an episode of Star Trek), but its a very popular snack in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the U.S.
This peculiar fruit is also known as the horned melon, jelly melon, African horned cucumber, hedged gourd, melano, and blowfish fruit.
Kiwano connoisseurs describe the flavor of the slimy green interior as a cross between cucumber, zucchini, and kiwifruit (though as it ripens, it tastes more like a banana).
A fully ripened kiwano has an orange rind with prominent spikes. To eat plain, cut the fruit in half, as shown above. Gently squeeze one half until the slime-covered seeds ooze out. The seeds arent harmful to eat, but many people prefer to hold the seeds between their teeth and suck off the green flesh.
If that doesnt sound appealing, you can also simply scoop out the inner fruit and toss it in fruit salads or use as a colorful garnish.
Kiwano melons are also excellent in exotic drinks. Check out this yummy recipe for a minty gin-and-champagne kiwano cocktail!
Brest milk is common in that area of France, ;^)
I prefer Breast milk, direct, with a couple of chocolate cookies. As did my Uncle Saul! ;^) Olde joke.
“Lord , I apologize!”
I enjoy watching Andrew Zimmern on Bizzare Foods regularly but he gets paid good money to travel and eat those odd things. I think I'll just stick with the conventional apples, pears, peaches, grapefruits, oranges, grapes, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries from our own property.
” a fresh fruit bowel brought to our room “
I think I’ll pass on the “bowel”!
Mangosteen? Rev. Joel adopted a Chinese daughter?
I sure hope you meant "bowl". :)
LOL that sounds delightful.
Hmm, I’ve just added about a dozen things to my food bucket list! :-)
Always wanted to try Durian, but never got the chance. A local Asian market is now carrying them whole and frozen, though, so maybe I’ll try it this summer (outside, of course).
I don’t care for passion fruit. It’s too “perfume-y” for my taste. In that it tends to take over whatever its paired with. I once had a fresh tropical fruit salad in Hawaii that had a scoop of passion fruit ice/sherbet on top. The PF funk permeated everything.
A couple not listed, but I’ve tried are carambola/starfruit and prickly pear. Starfruit is okay. It reminds me of a bit of a tangy apple. Prickly pear is a lot of work to eat, but not bad at all, IMHO. Sioux City Sodas makes a really tasty prickly pear soda pop.
LOL. You’re mean.
Gastronomically, he’s still a bit off!
(My daughter loves his shows)
I do not exaggerate. Vietnamese acquaintaces introduced us to Durian fruit. It isn’t too bad when you hold your nose to eat it.
I’ve had none. I did have Kiwi once and it was not to my liking. The list left off Boysenberry, a mix of blackberry with raspberry. The list also missed Miracle Fruit another berry found in West Africa.
I’m growning Pineberries this year in with my strawberries. They are delicious.

I guess you’re referring to the kind of diarrhea you get when you O.D. on fresh fruit. Right?
Been there, done that. It ain’t no fun.
Loquat fruit— these trees are all over Florida, have large orange/yellow fruit with two large seeds in them. You clean them of the seeds, wash them first, and then with or without the very thin skin (tasteless skin) you put in a fruit salad or over lettuce with pecans or walnuts or with cut apples, and mandarin orange sections or tangerine section— true ambrosia.
That’s if you can beat the dang squirrels to them— very rapidly will strip a full tree.
Love cumquats too— they are citrus fruit and plentiful.
