Woman With 650 Turtles in Her Bathroom Has No Clue What to Do With Them
New York Post ^ | May 9, 2015 | Laura Italiano

Lorri Cramer’s Upper West Side bathroom is “shell” on earth.

“I have no idea what I’m going to do with them,” Cramer said Saturday as 620 red-eared slider turtle hatchlings bobbed around in five big blue basins of water.

Every one of the golf-ball-sized baby turtles is a skittering speck of contraband — members of a non-native species that’s illegal to sell or release in New York state.

It was good size snappers my friend and my daughter were dealing with...on the farm we had a pond and the snapper we found by accident....I was walking around the pond and a robin was sitting just at the edge of the water. I wanted to see how close I could get to it before it flew away...I got right up to it and it just sat there...I scooped my hand under it and attached to its toe was a snapper about the size of my hand...picked it up with the turtle in one hand and the bird in the other...hubby and I tried to open that turtles mouth and its not possible once they clamp down..I wont write on what we tried to open that turtles mouth..checking the bird closer, the turtle only had hold of the middle claw...We ended up taking the middle toe of the bird off, it didn't bleed. I put it in some shrubs to recuperate and 1/2 hour later it had flown away....the turtle didn't make it and we threw him dead back into the pond...probably eaten by the bass and bluegill the pond was stocked with...the snapper couldn't pull the robin into the pond, he wasn't large enough, but the bird could have died of shock and that nasty snapper could have pulled it in the pond..

A tortoise or painted turtle would have gotten along fine, but they probably wouldn't have stayed on the property'

The first time daughter saw a snapper in their drive way she called me and thought it was neat...I asked her if she ran over it with the car and she thought I was nuts....a couple of years later when a big one took down her duck she had raised from a day old, she had totally changed her mind on snappers..if anyone disagrees with me, that fine, we are all entitled to our opinions, but if you haven't had experience with those critters, your opinion is worth too much...sorry to sound so cold, thats life

They have far more chromosomes than humans, IIRC.

Too bad the obama turtle wasn’t the one in the gator’s mouth above, instead of that other poor little guy.

What kind of tortoises? I have a 3 toes box tortoise I keep outside in a pen. Had him since birth and rescued from near death. Always on the hunt for more. If you ever have more babies, I will gladly pay for one. Some tortoises sell for well over 100 per.

I have never counted their toes! Gracie is lighter colored than George and she is larger, too. It is amazing how fast they can move when they want to.
