Noemi Zeigler Sanchez (stage name Madeline Minx) has released a new music video with her real-life Laney College media students titled “Rabbi of Rap.”
The plot is a tired cliché about urban youth rejecting negative stereotypes and focusing on schoolwork instead. “The Jewish Madonna” (yup, that’s what they call her) hands out books with yin and yang, peace, and various other symbols you could find on one of those coexist bumper stickers painted on their covers as the kids echo the phrase, “Put your guns down, lift your books up, rise up!”
Basically, the whole video is like a giant game of cliché Jenga: How many clichés can you stack on top of each other until the whole thing comes crumbling down?
It’s obviously all done with a sense of humor (and good intentions), but the clumsy examination of the cause of violence is cringe-worthy at best.
In the video, Harold, a small-time drug dealer inhabiting a world where women inexplicably grind up against comically dressed “gang bangers”, skips school to make a drug connection in a *gasp* graffitied campus parking lot, despite his girlfriend Tiffany’s objections. When the deal inevitably goes awry, Harold (for some reason) pulls Tiffany directly into a bullet's path. Good work Harold! You’re always fucking up.
But don't worry viewers, Harold’s desire to avenge the shooting is challenged by a rapping Rabbi who shows him why education, not violence, is the most powerful weapon.
The conclusion? In the video, we later learn Tiffany’s life was saved when the gangbanger’s bullet lodged into her book (OMG EDUCATION SAVED HER). Harold is so moved, he gives up his lifestyle to join a group of student activists who hand out free books adorned with various religious and equality symbols.
We’re all for fighting for education (something this real-life teacher and her students appear to be doing in this video, which has a relatively high production value and probably taught the students some good skills) but boy is this video silly.
Her career could benefit from a duet with Hopalong Ginsberg

Considering you usually have to be a middle aged man whose had decades of theological study behind them to start reading the Zohar, I doubt Madonna really got into the deep theological points of Kabbalah.

As a belated Mom’s day thing, since I miss my own very much—Christopher Hitchens P’d-off both Judeo-Christian religions by calling Mary the “original Jewish Mother”.
Mary was always ‘helicoptering’ around one of her favorites and it annoyed Jesus at times, as evidenced by the curt things He said to his dear old Mom. She always forgave Him.
