Americans Not In The Labor Force Rise To Record 93,194,000
In what was an "unambiguously" unpleasant April jobs payrolls report, with a March revision dragging that month's job gain to the lowest level since June of 2012, the fact that the number of Americans not in the labor force rose once again, this time to 93,194K from 93,175K, with the result being a participation rate of 69.45 or just above the lowest percentage since 1977, will merely catalyze even more upside to the so called "market" which continues to reflect nothing but central bank liquidity, and thus - the accelerating deterioration of the broader economy.

Yep, I absolutely believe it as someone who has read resumes myself. The education system in this country is an absolute disaster from hell, not so much the public schools because I always felt parents can teach their kids the basic “three R’s” and they will do fine, but the colleges. The colleges today are an absolute joke whose only interest is siphoning as much money as possible from students while passing them through on an assembly line graduation scam without one single solitary concern about what they have learned other than far leftist politics. It is an education Holocaust as far as I’m concerned and it’s been going on since the 1970s when the WW2 era Professors starting retiring and were replaced by these far leftist radicals from the 1960s. This is why today we got people like Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee in government. People with law degrees from Ivy league schools who in reality have about a 4th grade education, or this Marilyn Mosby down in Baltimore whose knowledge about the law seems to be about the same as a 6 year old, and she talks like one as well. This is exactly why we have such a screwed up country today, because the idiots literally are in charge.
Keep people Dependent and Voting Democrat = Re-Election and More Power!
Somehow the AP’s stories seems so much more rosy then the true picture. Has anyone seen it?
US employers add solid 223K jobs; rate 5.4 pct., 7-year low
Usually it means those of prime working age, 25-54 or 16-64, who are not students, institutionalized, or retired, etc.
That makes it even worse, then.
More than 1/3 of the workforce isn’t.
It also means that we’re quickly approaching or have broken through the point where
there are fewer people working than there are people living at their expense.
I think we’ve reached the point where government numbers are just made up, like in the old Soviet Union. Fortunately, there are private and state government statistics so fed numbers can’t get completely beyond plausibility.
Exactly! Good post.
Being in the workforce today is a joke when it comes to the younger folks.....unless they’re in front of a computer they can’t function! No basic manners yet they eat and breath all the smoosh about “Loving everyone”.
Maybe this country does need to feel the pains it’s experiencing. I’m not so sure it isn’t deserved.
Must have been bad weather.
And yet the fed won’t raise rates. Yelled knows the scam.
Working age. That puts real unemployment at over 25%.
Let's see... I am not employed, haven't been since '99. We've lived and saved just fine off my husband's salary since then.
My mom, at age 93, is not employed. Hasn't been since 1947 when my oldest sister was born.
My sister-in-law isn't employed. She's a stay at home mom, homeschooling her children.
Her oldest daughter is 19-years old and is, at the moment, unemployed. She's a full time college student. Of course, starting next month, she'll work full time as a Christian Bible camp counselor. But, come September, she'll be unemployed again.
Funny how these headlines work. They depend on folks jumping to the conclusion the headline writer is going for. Doing an analysis of what the data means takes a bit of effort. I'm not going to go to all that work. I just know that not all people age 18+ are looking for jobs. The largest number of people not looking for work include students, stay-at-home moms, and retirees.
Yes but even if you take into account all the retired, students etc, you would still be left with a sizable amount of people that is far above this “5.4%” they are claiming is the unemployment rate. If they say “93 million are unemployed” I am assuming they are not including students and the retired. Why would they? But even IF they are ridiculously including those, we can estimate it would knock off 2/3rds from that 93 million which would come to 30 million which is 10% unemployment or almost double of what they are saying. I really think what they are doing is counting the people on unemployment insurance which gives a ridiculously low percentage like 5.4%. Not everyone is eligible to collect unemployment. So as a result you get people like Obama and the rest of liberals going around bragging “Oh unemployment is the lowest it’s been in 40 years! We are heroes!” They are deceiving people.
The table of Household data, seasonally adjusted (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.a.htm) shows 93,194,000 people “not in the labor force.” It’s clear from the table that 16-year-olds are included in the numbers.
Another table from the BLS, also including April ‘15 data, but NON-seasonally adjusted, shows 93,712,000 people not in the labor force. But this table shows gives details on that subset of the population - Persons not in the labor force by desire and availability for work, age, and sex (http://www.bls.gov/web/empsit/cpseea38.htm).
Another BLS page - Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey (http://www.bls.gov/cps/lfcharacteristics.htm#top) defines “Not in the labor force” as “Persons who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force. This category includes retired persons, students, those taking care of children or other family members, and others who are neither working nor seeking work.”
93 million of working age, available to be in the workforce.
U3 is the number they report... “The U6 (10.8%) unemployment rate counts not only people without work seeking full-time employment (the more familiar U-3 rate), but also counts “marginally attached workers and those working part-time for economic reasons.” Note that some of these part-time workers counted as employed by U-3 could be working as little as an hour a week. And the “marginally attached workers” include those who have gotten discouraged and stopped looking, but still want to work. The age considered for this calculation is 16 years and over.” What throws all the numbers off is the number of illegal aliens counted among the working number while taking jobs away from Americans which cause the “unemployed & not in the labor force” to continue to rise.
Does this include retired people and disabled people?
So how large is the entire workforce?
