Stricter rules, economic problems and changing social habits mean that Russians are consuming less alcohol, and that's sobering news for the global vodka industry
In good news for Russian life expectancy but sobering news for vodka distilleries, the largest country in the world is turning away from alcohol.
Alcohol consumption in Russia, which is believed to have fallen into economic recession, dropped by 6.3pc in 2014 amid ongoing political tension, the collapse in oil prices and a government crackdown on drinking.
Russians drank 12pc less vodka last year, according to data from Euromonitor International, dragging down global sales of the clear spirit by 5pc, its biggest slump in at least five years.

O O Wow we are in the Last Days =)
LOL!
I think it is a continuous trend. Some 20 years ago vodka has followed you anywhere in Russia. It was ok to have a shot at breakfast, some six shots at lunch and a half a bottle after work. A person limiting himself to that amount of booze in that order wasn’t even considered a drinker. Refusing a drink with someone was counted as an insult and if one haven’t drank at all people could think the person is gay or have some sort of terminal illness.
It is gradually changing, especially for a last decade.
I think today people around make scary eyes at you if you ‘ll order a pint of beer along your burger at Burger King before noon.
And, as I learned from experience, if Russians bring a large jug of vodka to a party, nobody leaves until it’s polished off.
If the Russians stop drinking...we’ve got a big problem on our hands!
Yes, there was an old omen saying it would bring a bad luck to end party unless all available booze is over but due to my observations it is getting defunct too.
Usually that’s the way it happens.
stupid article since Vodka is what they drink in the way of Al K. Hall
Which, of course, knows exactly how much "samogon" (bathtub vodka) Russians are drinking!
Regards,
They are grasping at anything to fit their ridiculous reporting format. Oil prices? Why not just blame global warming?
In Soviet Russia, vodka drinks you!
In Soviet Russia, vodka drinks you!
grrr
My first experience with drinking was cherry vodka. I think I was 15. Brother, was I sick the next day!
Mine was a 6-pack of Budweiser, also at age 15. Bed spins, sick, & tossed my cookies. Haven’t touched Budweiser since...and that was a long time ago.
Reminds me of that Russian ice skater on Oprah a few years back. She got pulled over for a DUI. Oprah asked how much she had to drink and she said, “Five Long Island Ice Teas” the audience gasped and she said in Russia that was absolutely normal.
There was a legal alcohol limit at the time. Average person could have had half a liter of beer and drive. DUI over that limit wasn’t that much a big thing too punished with a little fine. Repeated offenders could have had their license suspended for a couple months.
Today it is not that much tolerated. You can get your license suspended for 6 months after one count and if you would cause accident and kill someone it would be a couple of years prison time.
