On 7 May 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquarters in Reims, France, to take effect the following day, ending the second world war in Europe.
In this gallery, we look back at VE Day and the events leading up to Germany's surrender.

Sad video, but important to understand the aftermath of war,
flying over the ruins of Berlin in 1945

70 years ago today, Nazis unconditionally surrender.
Hitler has committed suicide, the Third Reich demolished.
Thanks and prayers to all the vets then and now.
WWII did not end today 70 years ago.
That event happened in August 1945.
Victory Europe happened 70 years ago this month.
Facts. Many died after this date in that war.
VE Day was not the ending of WW2.
Actually the end came on Sept. 2,1945 when Japan signed the articles of surrender aboard the battleship U.S.S. Missouri docked in Tokyo Harbor.
Yep, it was the end of the 2nd WW—in Europe—unless the Japs snuck in under the radar... ;)
Being in the US, we forget the destruction during WWII. It was many years before the damage was repaired.
Screw Berlin, look what those Nazi bastards did to Warsaw.

Thanks for correcting my correction.
WW2 didn’t officially end until 1952 with the Treaty of San Francisco.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_San_Francisco
Treaty of San Francisco (or commonly known as the Treaty of Peace with Japan, Peace Treaty of San Francisco, or San Francisco Peace Treaty), mostly between Japan and the Allied Powers, was officially signed by 48 nations on September 8, 1951, at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, California, United States. It came into force on April 28, 1952.
This treaty served to officially end World War II, to formally end Japan’s position as an imperial power, to allocate compensation to Allied civilians and former prisoners of war who had suffered Japanese war crimes, and to end the Allies’ military occupation and return sovereignty to Japan. This treaty made extensive use of the UN Charter[1] and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights[2] to enunciate the Allies’ goals.
Hostilities ceased in September as another poster pointed out, not as I stated, in August. This sounds like the occupation and final “you’re on your own” government left by MacArthur was what happened in the “final” treaty.
There will be no treaty with Islam, ever.
