Alan Garay (43 years old) was a 260 pound strongman that won competitions both in Argentina and Spain. He could lift 880 pounds, pull 15 ton trucks and lift cars with little problem, but that didnt save him from getting killed two days ago in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.
After an argument with Fernando Pezetti, a 50 year old cartonero (paper and trash scavenger) over trash left on the sidewalk next to his house, Mr. Garay got into a fight with the man, easily overpowering him and punching him in the face. As Garay left, the scavenger produced a knife and stabbed him twice in the torso. The neighbors called for help but Garay was dead by the time help arrived.
Garay had lived in Madrid for ten years and had recenlty moved back to Argentina. He worked security at night clubs and at times was part of security details of international celebrities.
Lessons Learned:
1)Dont get into a fight if you can avoid it.
2)Dont EVER underestimate your opponent, even if youre literally the strongest man in the country going against some random 50 year old hobo.
3)Always assume your opponent may be armed, NEVER turn your back on him.
4)Knives are ALWAYS lethal weapons. They dont jam, they dont run out of ammo and its practically impossible to pry one away from an attacker without losing a few fingers.
5)Again, just dont get into fights, ESPECIALLY against someone that has nothing to lose.

Let’s restate point number one more honestly, and then give a revised point number two which flows naturally from that.
1. Don’t physically assault people even if they do something annoying.
2. If you do, you fully deserve whatever happens to you. Even if you are famous.
3. No further points are needed.

As Garay left, the scavenger produced a knife and stabbed him twice in the torso. As I read this.
Garay caught the Hobo rifling his trash and making a mess. Got in to a fight with Pezetti and punched him out.
Having he thought vanquished the hobo he turned his back on him and walked away. Pezetti then drew his knife and stabbed him in the back, murdering Garay.
Lesson 6) Never turn your back on an opponent.

Lesson 7 might be:beat him until he is unconcious or too broken up to continue, then make sure he has no buddies lurking nearby.

Long ago in my youth a guy teased me (startled me) while I was holding a screwdriver to change out a tire tube on a bicycle. Without thinking I threw it at him. Prior to that he used to show off his abs. They didn’t do so well against a 1/4” slotted - but fortunately he didn’t press charges (although he debated it).

1a. You may physically assault someone if they are going to murder you. Preferably with a better weapon than they have.

Never start a fight, but always be prepared to end one. Decisively.

Yes, if you’re fighting in the right, do it cautiously and well, and do whatever it takes to win.
Then be ready to resume your fight - with some government flack, deadheaded bureaucrat, or ambitious District Attorney, all of them looking to promote a career over your dying corpse.
Sorry if that sounds cynical, but... keep the name of a vicious lawyer in your wallet at all times, good times and bad; it’s as deadly, and as necessary, as a good blade in your pocket.

Lesson 7 might be:beat him until he is unconcious or too broken up to continue To answer this I will refer you back to lesson #1 Dont get into a fight if you can avoid it. (Assuming your post was serious)
There are at least 2 reasons for this; first is you could be killed and second you could kill him.
If you beat someone senseless there is a fairly high chance they could die from their injuries.
If they die you may face trial for murder. If you face trial even if you are acquitted you will likely be finically ruined.

How about “Make sure the fight’s over before you turn your back”?
To: dennisw
As I was about to start the sparring section of my first black belt test, my teacher’s teacher asked if I thought I could win even if I got hurt.
“Yes” I said.
“Good, now you understand that you can win and still get hurt”, he said.

Self defense is not assault.

Sounds like self defense to me. The "Strong man" picked a fight with the paper collector and assaulted him. Looks like Teddy Roosevelt was right.
