This is a US Government website which tracks our (negative, and getting ever worse) trade deficit with the Peoples Republic of China.
Last year we ran an all-time new record trade deficit with China of 342 billion dollars.

You are forgetting, as jobs are automated, the anger of those without jobs will intensify. More and more voters will be impacted, and less and less Americans will be in a situation to vote for Republicans if the GOP is outsourcing.
At some point, protectionism will become a very big topic.
I imagine within one or two election cycles. The first party to run on this topic I believe, will rule for many years.

Eventually someone will stand up, and demand a big change. If the GOP is not leading that charge, they will be pushed to one side, when America once again wants to buy American goods.
I understand there is very big opposition to this, there is a lot of money for (some) to make on selling out America.
I’m only saying voters count in our system. America will at some point want to rebuild, and buy things made right here.
Don’t wait for democrats to be in charge of that process.

Interstate tariffs are unconstitutional. That is the point - domestic tariffs are not a good thing and steep import tariffs are a good thing. It is how the USA became a developed nation the 1800's. And this strength continued until progressives took over in the early 20th century. You can track the USA's economic downfall when the income taxes started replacing tariffs. Almost to the year.
I believe we as a country need to start defending American companies, and discouraging companies from going (and staying) overseas.
One way to address this is with trade tariffs.
If you want to buy a coffee cup for example, you would buy a coffee cup. One coffee cup made in China might cost 50 cents. Another coffee cup made in America might cost 1.50. I think we need to charge tariffs on imported goods, raising the price of goods so that the goods are evenly priced.
I am not advocating our government not allow competition on American shelves. However I believe it is wrong to allow companies to manufacture things all over the world in other countries, and eliminate all jobs in America.
We are long overdue for some action in this regards.
Not everyone will support trade tariffs, but I believe they are the simplest and fairest idea I have heard of, and I do believe it is an idea whose time is here.
Things will cost a bit more.
I am ready for that, if it means jobs. We as a country need to focus on America jobs.
Actually the cost advantage in off shoring is in labor savings which is less than 5%. SO your example it should be 50 cents vs. 55 cents. That really reflects the absurdity of the whole situation. Selling out the USA for pennies on the dollar.
If we REALLY did save 75% then off shoring might have some economic value. But manufacturing is not as labor intensive as people think.

You and I have been down that road before. You might remember that I rejected tariffs in favor of reducing the punitive level of business taxes and the overburden of regulations in this country.
In my view, those things are the primary drivers of businesses leaving these shores to begin with. It stands to reason that American manufacturing companies were enticed to relocate their operations to countries with lower business taxes, fewer regulations, and lower labor costs. The business of business is to maximize profits, and you can't argue with the simple arithmetic of the thing.
American manufacturing businesses would be only too happy to relocate their operations to these shores if our government reduced taxes and regulations to a threshold that made America a more attractive place to do business than foreign countries.
In my view, those are the things to push for - not a punitive tariff on imported goods. Imposing a tariff on those goods without also lowering business taxes and regulations would likely cause most overseas companies to quit the U.S. altogether.

Easy then... Eliminate or reduce corporate taxes, vastly reduce the cost of regulation and compliance and kill every other attorney (or at least exile them to Siberia).

That's patently liberal thinking, my friend.
We conservatives believe in removing the yoke of big government from the necks of our citizens and their businesses. We know from simple observation, that increased Freedom is what releases the dynamo of human industry and innovation.
If you truly want what you've been demanding all these years, you have to demand conservative solutions to problems, as they're the only ones that work.
In this case, the conservative solution is to reduce government-imposed costs and penalties associated with operating manufacturing businesses in America. Lower business taxes, slash the onerous regulations, and the jobs will come back, because business goes where the grass (and profit) is greener.
I predict Palin won’t announce this month.
