Horrific moment police dog savages man's face after he puts his hands up
Daily Mail ^ | 5/1/15 | Sara Malm

A Utah man is suing the local police force after one of its dogs attacked him during an arrest, after he had put his hands up and surrendered.

Martin Lee Hoogveldt, 33, had already given himself up after armed police entered his home in response to a disturbing-the-peace complaint in 2013, but the dog still jumped at him, clamping its jaws around his face.

The dog handler's body camera captured the horrific attack, and can be seen struggling to get the dog, a German shepherd called Pyro, to let go of Hoogveldt's face.

The West Jordan Police Department says officers were at risk.

I guess that the West Jordan Police Department forgot to mention to the West Jordan taxpeasants that their wallets were at risk.

The officers say a large empty knife sheath on a table and believed that because of his history, Hoogveldt would pose a "lethal threat" if they approached him and sent in the dog to detain him, the release says.

So I guess when the officers saw an empty beer can or two on a table, they were worried that he might go Berserker Drunk on them, and thus continued to allow the rabid, crazed Officer-Judge Barky to savage the guy while he was lying on his belly with his hands behind his back... LOL! :)

The handler was letting the dog savage the guy while they were cuffing him. He was lying on his belly with his hands behind his back.

Hey, I love dogs. Love em, love em, love em.

That said, once their spring is sprung it’s time for the death penalty, as they have no concept of punishment, reform, etc.

The cop is a complete A-hole and so are his buddies.

Sorry if I hit a nerve on that one point. I tend to see a lot of people supporting cops when the cops act unlawfully. I tend to knee-jerk on that.

I don't know that you do that and will keep that in mind in the future. Mea culpa.

.
A .45 slug through the dog’s skull would have been the quickest solution.

Have you ever seen a police dog that was in any way controllable?

I’ve seen them severely bite the hands and arms of their handlers too many times. They’re trained to attack, and once they are on their quarry often do not listen for any other command.

Maybe I’m losing it here. But the suspect appears to have a handcuffs on his right wrist at 00:34 prior to the dog attacking him.

But no mention of this in the story?

Yes, when law enforcement gets into trouble there is always “more to the story.”

The false facts seem to multiply like lab rats, and exaggerations abound instantly.

Nothing makes me madder than the very people we pay to “protect and serve” the citizenry, use that trust to abuse our rights or go on power trips to inflate their egos...

I understand the vast majority of cops do a good job...

But far too many in the last 20 years think themselves as our overlords rather than our first line of defense against the criminal element...

Yes, it looks like he does.

What's that all about?

Another tidbit from the video:

The Great Big Giant Out-Of-Control Blazing Fire was in a barrel.

Dogs on your face for a burn barrel, peasants!

For some reason burn barrels have become “Assault Barrels.”

In Tuolumne County, California, in the midst of the Stanislaus National Forest, Where we can burn acres at a time with a permit that costs nothing to obtain, burning in a burn barrel carries a $1000 fine.

No one here, nor does the video explain it.

Very odd.

I've been accidentally latched onto by my dogs just playing with them when they get a bit carried away playing. No bite, just latching on a bit hard. It gets your attention very fast...lol...Can't imagine one meaning business with a full clamp down on the face.

That had to be incredibly excruciating.

‘I did nothing but try to make it easy for them. I thought I would not be a threat sitting down,’ Hoogveldt told the Salt Lake Tribune.

He also claims he remained in the sofa as he would have needed to take his hands down in order to push himself out of the sofa.

Never understood the tears shed for police dogs when some perp plugs one.

Really?

This is the last SOB who shot a LE dog in CA last year.

The dog located the armed stupid SOB gangster hiding in wait for the cops, when the dog found him first hiding in a trash container. SOB shot the dog through the jaw, blowing off part of his jaw. The violent SOB gangster was then shot to death.

Anaheim police K-9 Bruno is recovering from a gunshot wound at Yorba Regional Animal Hospital in Anaheim. Bruno's lower jaw is pinned to an external fixator. The bullet went through his jaw and remains in his torso. Bruno is watching someone holding his favorite toy, a Mickey Mouse doll, as Dr. Steve Dunbar looks on in this photo from April 1.

GS dogs are extremely smart, as well as loyal. More so than most people have a clue about. These dogs do lot of good for LE as well as others who are looking for loyal best friend.

Most GS dogs fear little or nothing and will die if needed protecting their owners.

Don't judge all dogs or cops the same.

If certain cops can't handle their dogs, they should never be assigned one.

Really?

If you sic a dog on a fellow human being then you are asking for the dog to get shot — and you too.

This is probably a little jaded comment, but, is this what the Chinese mean by losing face? I’ll have to watch the video again to see some of the details mentioned here that I missed the first time. It was difficult to watch.
