Baltimore families (vanity)

What really bothers me about Baltimore is the despair in that city, the devaluation of young men and the destruction of the family. Young men who father children are disenfranchised and encouraged not to become a part of their lover's family. They thus miss the love, joy and responsibility of raising their own children. Then those young boys and girls are raised without their father and miss that essential element of their families. Young men may turn to gangs as their only source of respect and survival. How can we encourage the formation of families rather than their generational disintegration in the underclasses? The incentive to pay women who are single mothers may not be the best way to cope with these issues. I think these inner city issues need to be seriously reconsidered by all parties and classes.

I would love to hear people's thoughts on this idea. I posted it on Facebook, where I like to have discussions like this. It was interesting that NOT ONE of my liberal friends (and being a professor, I have lots of liberal colleagues....if they haven't unfriended me by now)....not one of those liberals made any comment whatsoever. Are they only interested in the "more money" argument? Even Bob Beckel, from Fox, admits that the inner city programs have been a failure. How do we rectify this? We need to hear from more mothers like the heroin who was punishing her son for partaking in the riots.

I love how the liberals jumped all over the lady that went and grabbed her son off the streets. I think she slapped him some. The liberals say that was a case of bad parenting. However those teens that were looting and burning among other things I guess in the liberal mind that is good parenting.

There should be changes in how we view all of this.

At one time, a girl who got pregnant without a husband couldn’t just go get on public assistance. Society is subsidizing and encouraging this behavior.

At one time, there were great social pressures on young men, who were responsible for a girl’s pregnancy, to marry the girl. Society has become non-judgemental about this, so young men who get girls pregnant don’t feel any responsibility.

There are other changes which have happened in society as well, in past decades, which got us to this point. But I would focus on these as being key elements in social breakdown. Irresponsible parenting, which results in the next generation not being raised properly, drives many other problems.

There are so many men incarcerated for possession of drugs... I simply don’t care what adults do in regards to recreational drug use. It makes it difficult to apply for a job once you have any type of criminal record...If we removed these odious laws, these adults would still be around.

Again, the despair is an ongoing mindset. Randy Newman wrote a song about it in 1977 (Prince probably wasn't born yet).

Baltimore.

These are very profound and elucidating words. Indeed we should all pause to consider the deepest inner meanings and sociopolitial ramifications of our inter-independencies as a society and as a nation. As President Obama so wisely said, it is time for all of us to search our souls. Regrettably, however, and to my interminable shame, when I was mugged at gunpoint in Baltimore in the mis 90s all I could think of was the prospect of "getting away." Socially irresponsible of me? Perhaps. Neglectful of my responsibilities to the world at large? Likely. Alas, I got away. How many times have I wished that I could return to that great, great, city - with all its charm, it's welfare and incarceration rates, it's noble Democrat leadership, it's highest per capita HIV infection rates of any city anywhere... And atone for my sins?

I think I’ve been here long enough to earn my keep... regardless of my personal opinions, and there was no sarcasm in my post.

Why? You clearly don’t understand conservatism.

It depends on the drugs and how ruinous they can be. Heroin is awful. But concerning minor drugs, I agree completely.

LBJ started the War in the 60s. Sen Percy Rino-IL and his type modified it with bribes to street gangs and disastrous housing sections. Then Nixon added Section 8 Housing in the 70s.

Coming out of this there were several models:
Chicago had several Alinsky models in TWO, NCO, OBA. Arkansas with newly arrived Hilary had ACORN. But the Baltimore model became the favorite of the Progressives. Under Jimmy, Msgr Geno Barone made it the dominant federal direction.

The key feature of the Baltimore model is that the Progressives don’t fight the establishment, nor kiss the ring of the establishment. No, they become the establishment.

Heroin is awful... but incarcerating addicts is idiotic. There's this "fear" that legalization will increase use... an editor from Reason wrote a book about drug use and the actual numbers of addicts, based on the governments own statistics. Seems 10% of people have addictive personalities, there are certainly enough statistics to show that many people use various drugs including alcohol at a recreational level that never increases to dependency.

Heroin, is a different story as becoming physically addicted is a given... but one should conclude that most people have no interest in shooting up with anything, including heroin.

What it has come down to is that we are paying never-married women to have babies.

The only bad thing about posting it on Facebook is that someone you work with might report you.

The problem with “recreational” drug use is that drugs are addicting. What you might start on as “fun” soon turns into a death sentence.

“Then Nixon added Section 8 Housing in the 70s.”

Lots of press today about how rents are so high. If you took away Section 8 the rents would normalize.

Causes of poverty are multiple, from the adverse effects of urban renewal and public policy but I think mostly jobs were lost through transformation in the technology and organization of manufacturing which created a vacuum for the drug trade to move in. Putting fewer black men in jail is going to do very little in relation to structural changes to the global economy.

I’d say promote women’s lib and then make it easy for them to raise children without fathers by making all kinds of government programs available to them and not to most married couples.

Promote indiscriminate sex, make being gay an in thing and transgenderism normal.

Get God out of the narrative and make morality a grey area.

Make sure that even in married families both spouses have to work to help ends meet and allow the children to be raised by strangers.

Oh! You were wondering how to make a strong family!

Honestly, without faith and the awareness of morality in connection with God, there is no tried and true way.

Even in the worst of situations some kids grow up fine but the vast majority need 2 parents who have religious guidance, who truly teach right from wrong. We need parents who parent and don’t allow the children to make all their own decisions and even some of the parents decisions.

I could go on....

My! How quickly a thread can degrade into the tired liberaltarian fix all of “just legalize drugs and all of society’s problems will instantly disappear” meme. I give you credit for clearly stating you are a liberaltarian on your home page. Honesty IS a highly ranked virtue in my book. The furthest I will go in entertaining your argument is to suggest that perhaps drugs get decriminalized. I go no further in that discussion. Get that out of the way and then what? Obviously since you’ve been a member of the premier conservative website for as long as you have, you can’t possibly be ignorant enough to think that decriminalizing, or even legalizing, drugs will solve this problem presented in the original vanity post....

I’m just really getting sick and tired of liberaltarian arguments highjacking threads, and worse, that LIV lurkers may actually somehow see such as valid conservative view points, since they have been presented here on Free Republic.
