Adam Smith admits he probably could have picked a better way to communicate his convictions. In fact, the one-time corporate honcho now wishes he had.
The former CFO of medical manufacturer Vante filmed himself berating a Chick-Fil-A server for the company's notorious stance on gay rights, then lost his $200,000-a-year job after he posted the video online and it went viral.
Now, Smith and his family are living in an RV, scraping by on food stamps.
In his new e-book, "A Million Dollar Cup of Water," the 37-year-old details his experiences since that fateful day he decided to make his point, perhaps naively unaware of the consequences he'd face in spreading his rant over the Internet.
He doesn't regret the stance he took, but he revealed he is sorry about the way he spoke to that fast food worker.
Smith's downfall made headlines in 2012 after he pulled up to a drive-thru in Tuscon, Ariz., to get a free cup of water, ABC News reported.
He proceeded to spew a volley of abuse at the young worker about her company's stated commitment to "traditional marriage." He filmed himself saying that "Chick-Fil-A is a hateful corporation" and told the server he didn't "know how you live with yourself and work here."
He then uploaded the video.
Smith returned to work at the medical manufacturer Vante to find that the clip had gone viral.
"The voicemail is completely full, and it's full of bomb threats," his receptionist reportedly told him.
Smith was fired and lost his handsome salary, plus $1 million in stock options.
He moved with his wife Amy and four children to Portland, Ore., where he was appointed CFO for another company.
But he lost the role just two weeks later after bosses realized who he was. Since then, he has struggled to find a lasting gig.
Businesses have been too wary of the potential fallout to hire Smith, he said.
"I think people are scared that it could happen again," he told ABC.
His e-book is not faring so well on the digital charts, however.
"Regarding the many 1-star ratings my book has received today and yesterday, I would like to note that I have only sold 17 digital copies thus far, yet there are 23 1-star ratings on my book. This fascinates me! LOL!" he told ABC.
His sense of self righteousness may be necessary now that he’s living in a van down by the river.
The kind of a**hole who would do something like he did.
Yep, he is just an evil little liberal who made himself feel superior by berating the teenager who appeared at the window.
>> I have a feeling that his ongoing behavior is what keeps him from another high paying gig.
I think you nailed it.
got caught?
did he himself proudly post it online?
We’ve seen stuff like that, like the veterinarian who killed a cat with an arrow, she was proud of it
I’m sure there is a Chik-Fil-it that will hire him . . . but at a substantial loss, wait . . . he’s like making nothing now - so it would be like getting a raise.
They could post him right there in the drive-up window.
Karma can be nasty that way sometimes.
I love a happy story on a Friday!
This moron got exactly what he deserves.
Aw shucks. Some liberal needs to start a Go Fund Me campaign for him. LOL!
If he said anything legally actionable I hope the girl he berated can sue him for the motor home.
Maybe he should look for a job with the dem party. They may not pay well but the perks seem to make up for any shortage of actual legitimate wages.
Of course not. I was merely saying that even if they did have such a policy, the woman can hardly be responsible for the Company’s stance. An employer’s opinions/policies are separate from an employee’s personal beliefs—even if they do share the same ideas. The moron had no right to harass an individual for having a job at a place that supposedly “discriminates”. Especially in this economy.
The guy’s an idiot. It doesn’t shock me.
He was yucking it up with his self-righteous lib buddies on Instagram and decided to play hero. He never dreamed in a million years that anyone would disagree with him because, after all, all the cool kids hate CFA.
I’m sorry to hear that he has an RV to live in. He doesn’t deserve a roof over his head : )
From what I read his company was looking for an excuse to fire him before this. He gave it to them.
I feel bad for his children.
So do I. The children are innocent of his wrongdoing.
I’m pretty sure you were being facetious but seriously consider that for a minute. What if this guy was some rat staffer, or some high ranking federal scum. He would still be at his job laughing about how he stuck it to that poor little girl working the Chick-fil-a window.
The fool deserved what he got
