Living far from town and with a small group of houses on the other hand is generally pretty good.
You are far enough away from the majority of the troubles to be safe and you have a nice home guard.
You can also afford to send small group into the city and they can stay there for a while until you collect what you need.
Although if you plan carefully you should not need to go into town that often.
