I worked at a Japanese company here in the US for about 10 years as the network engineer. We had this same problem. We were always getting new shipments of Japanese interns every month or so. They were always breaking the seats and tracking mud all over them. They finally started including western toilet etiquette to their orientation and even then the problem never went away. Many thought it was completely unsanitary to sit on the toilet and refused to do it.

I saw a picture of a girl who stood on one of those to paint, or hang something. It was from some other country. The porcelain cut a baseball gloved slice off of her buttocks and legs to the bone. It would have taken a tiger 3 minutes with a katana to do what the toilet did to her in. .3 of a second. I am surprised the guy got back on the flight.

In China, it might b a good idea to consider standing on the seat rather than sitting. After all, you don’t really know who has had their shoes on the seat earlier.

Several years ago, while traveling by rail from Shanghai to far northeastern China, the only toilet facility was a closeted hole in the floor. It rather offended my Western sensibilities, but I was in their culture and didn't want to complain. I just squatted and did what I had to do. Mr. RR only had to stand to do what he had to do. Returning to America, I nearly bowed to the beautiful porcelain, pristine toilet. God bless America.
