Dodge is experiencing the cliché too much of a good thing, and has stopped production of its 707 horsepower halo cars, the Challenger SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat, to allow the Brampton, Ontario plant to catch up on existing orders.
The official statement released by FCA U.S. says, Due to unprecedented demand for the 2015 Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats, we are temporarily restricting orders while we validate current orders that are in the system."
While there's been no official word from the automaker regarding when it will resume selling the SRTs, some reports say it could be August before Dodge begins to accept orders again.
Dodge received more than 4,500 orders in the first five minutes of sales back in September 2014, for a car they'd planned to build just 5,000 of in total.
In February, the automaker announced on its blog that dealers were accepting more orders than the company could actually build.
Apparently each of the 2,300 American dealerships were informed they will get just one Hellcat per month, yet many reportedly accepted orders - and non-refundable deposits - for dozens or even hundreds more.
The situation was so bad that the automaker's blog post included a list of five questions a potential buyer should first ask a dealer before ordering and placing a deposit, including if that deposit is refundable should the order go unfilled.
In the old days, cars had "style." They had personality. They had individuality.
Today, they all look the same. They all look like turtles.
That's why I drive a Jeep Wrangler and a classic sports car. I can't stand driving a turtle car.
One, The Hellcat was a pretty good WW2 fighter-bomber. Just ask the Japanese.
Two: Who the hell needs 707 HP in a car? Where are you going to drive it, Bonneville Flats?
Then, can you afford the gas for it?
Unless it has wings, it’s just a very expensive car that is practically useless in a normal society.
Want to have plenty of power to pass!! hehe
You are obviously not a car guy.
How many have been wrecked already?
To put things in perspective- a Cessna 172 is just 180hp. Lots of aircraft are <100hp, including the one I learned on.
You’d think their marketing team and upper management would have known to expect this.
My Challenger is the Sweetest, best driving car I have ever owned. I traded a Camaro for it.
Lol.
“Unprecedented Demand = People want to buy these automobiles but we cant sell enough hybrid smartcar Fiats to balance out the metrics for CAFE standards.”
Give that man a cookie.
He got in one!
I had one of those but it was colored Pontiac Arctic White. It got 10 MPG downhill.
The wind tunnel bevels off the personality. All to get that extra .5 MPG.
Deposit at my dealer was only $5,000.
typical dumb reporter. they are slowing the sales side so production can catch up. The idiot never saw an assembly line or factory.
” normal society.”
Why be normal?
Come to think of it, you are absolutely correct. You are the first person to give me a good answer for why almost all cars today look the same.
Glad these don't care about gas Parasitic or Interference drag drag efficiency.
You had the 400? Mine got 8mpg when not running.
I used to hate Jeeps but now I see them as the ideal ‘bug out’ vehicle when the SHTF. Got to be camo colors though.
Old school Pontiacs got the worst MPG.
