GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says he has received a formal request from Pete Rose asking that his lifetime ban be lifted and that he will consider the all-time hits leader's request "on its merits."

"I want to make sure I understand all of the details of the Dowd Report and Commissioner [Bart] Giamatti's decision and the agreement that was ultimately reached," Manfred said after a meeting with Los Angeles Dodgers players in Arizona on Monday morning. "I want to hear what Pete has to say, and I'll make a decision once I've done that."

Rose's previous efforts to gain leniency from commissioners Fay Vincent and Bud Selig were never considered.

Rose, 73, played from 1963 to 1986, amassing 4,256 hits, still a major league record. Three years after he retired, Rose agreed to a permanent ban from baseball amid accusations he gambled on games while playing and managing for the Cincinnati Reds.

It should not affect his entry into the hall. His accomplishments were before his disgrace. And his admittance into the hall must be tempered with his inability to be part of current play. What’s so hard about that.

A hall of fame with the arguably BEST player and definitely BEST hitter is a joke.

Yes, thanks, by Post #55 I had discovered proof of that.

Rose agreed to the ban in 89, it was 91 that the rules were changed to keep folks on the banned list out of the Hall. Rose could argue that he never agreed to a lifetime ban from the Hall, that MLB changed the rules after the fact just to keep him out; which is exactly what they did.

Even is Rose is cleared by MLB he would still have to be voted into the Hall. I'm not sure he could get the votes needed from the sportswriters or the old timers commission.

Time for baseball to get its head out of the sand and acknowledge Rose’s accomplishments.

I assume they will, but not while he's alive to see it.

Rose has been in tonight’s All Star Game both in the pre game show and now a commercial.

Looks like he is going to get his pardon.
