Ah, yes. Reminds us of the eternal debate: Ginger or Mary Ann?

Definitely Mary Ann.

There are two reasons Mary Ann always wins. First of all, her character is a much more pleasing, girl next door, type and second she is just plain hotter.

Agree on both counts. Plus, she knew how to cook. That came in very handy for 7 castaways on a deserted island.

I was just thinking of this song the other day - it pops in my head upon hearing a liberal say something.

Yes Mary Ann and the Professor are the most valuable members of the castaways. The Skipper knows the sea and can work plus Ginger can cook also.

Mary Ann also knows how to farm as does the professor.

The Howells are basically dead weight.

Gilligan is their worst nightmare.

“I read that Natalie Schaefer was an old friend of Sherwood Schwartz. She was probably a beauty in her youth but she was actually quite a bit older than the character she played.”

Schaefer was born in 1900 so she would have been 65 in 1965 which is about the age I think of the charaters.

Speaking of people not playing their age in a show.

Bea Arthur (1922) and Betty White (1922) were both a year older than Estelle Getty (1923). Rue McClanahan was about 12 years younger. The oldest, Betty White at 93 is the only one of the four still with us.

Nerdish trivia alert: the actual song the girls are singing is “You Need Me” and the name of their group was “The Honeybees.”

Does anyone recall the name of the rock group stranded on the island that precipitated their rocking out? Hint: they were a Beatles knockoff.

That one is fairly easy. “The Mosquitoes”, Bingo, Bango, Bongo and Irvin.

Sorry I couldn’t find a better recording of Nini Rosso’s “Il Silenzio.” There used to be some good videos featuring the original recording on Youtube, but whoever owns the copyright has been cracking down on those.

I've always liked the Kathy Young and the Innocents' version. Here's the original:
