This flare was classified as an X2.2-class flare.

...

This flare was emitted from Active Region 12297 (AR12297) on the sun.

According to the US Space Weather Prediction Centre (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado, the flare caused an hour-long blackout in some high-frequency radio communications over some areas.

I used to be in communications in the Air Force. I was stationed at a location in the early 70s where an atmospheric SID (sudden ionospheric disturbance) occurred.

It shut off all HF communications. It took out everything we had up to UHF frequencies and even degraded Microwave comms. Supposed to happen on an 11 year sunspot cycle.

Higher frequencies are less affected, particularly when they don’t involve transmission via the ionosphere.

When you have a lot of solar activity, all those extra particles hitting the Earth's upper atmosphere also results in a warming of the Earth's climate. That's why during the famous Maunder Minimum of 1645 to 1715, the result was some of the coldest winters in recorded history, with both the Thames River in England and the Seine River in France regularly freezing over every winter.

I noticed radio stations being out yesterday afternoon for a while. Would not have guessed that was the cause.

What’s the backup plan when that happens?

the flare caused an hour-long blackout in some high-frequency radio communications over some areas.

Meaning, some spy satellite communication was down.

Back in that time, the protocol for HF comms was to go to the highest authorized frequency and wait it out because the highest frequencies always came back to normal first.

This was before fiber optics, widespread EHF satellite comms and the like...things today are different with the exception of probably noise and static and range degradation for TV and/or cell/PCS stuff.
