The state that includes Mumbai, Indias financial capital, this week became the first in the country to ban the possession and sale of beef, imposing fines and up to five years in prison for violations. The ban in the populous western state of Maharashtra, which was passed this week, came as an amendment to a 1972 law prohibiting the slaughter of cows, which has been expanded to ban the slaughter of bulls, bullocks and calves. The slaughter of water buffaloes will still be allowed, subject to permission from the authorities.

Where did you ever hear that? It's made from regular cows milk also.
Cows are sacred in India. Whats new about this? I don’t live in India I don’t care.
Growing up in India, 99% of the time the meat was from goats, also known as Mutton. Since good milk was hard to get in those days, my parents always had 3 or 4 domesticated water buffaloes in the stables mainly milk. They produced a lot of creamy milk, and we always had home churned butter. Those were not wild water buffaloes (WB) you may have seen on TV. They were very docile and content animals. They were fed cotton seeds, husks left over after oil extraction from sesame or peanuts, besides hay. They would spend afternoons cooling in nearby ponds.
Occasionally the WB’s produced excessive number of calves, and those were butchered for meat after they were weaned. That meat tasted similar to veal.
WB milk is very similar to cow milk, except it has more butter fat.
From a guide we had during a tour of Italy...the home of mozzarella.
It's made from regular cows milk also.
I'm sure you're correct but the real thing is made from water buffalo's milk.
McD doesn’t really care since their menu in India doesn’t serve beef; here’s something from their country page-
“McDonald’s worldwide is well known for the high degree of respect for the local culture of each market it operates in. In line with this respect for local culture, India is the first country in the world where McDonald’s does not offer any beef or pork items.”
