A winter storm warning is in effect for the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits through 6 a.m. Thursday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu say up to 10 to 15 inches of snow could fall above the 12,000-foot elevation of both Big Island mountains. The service also expects southwest winds around 15 to 25 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s.

Of the 13 micro-climates available on Planet Earth, 11 of them can be found on the Big island.

The two that aren’t there are Saharan-Style desert and arctic Tundra.

That leave a lot of leeway! LOL!

In my area, one can drive from Sahara style desert to Artic tundra in about an hour.

Oh dear. Will this mean disruption of those CO2 measurements on the summit of still-active volcano Mauna Loa? Hope this does not increase the likelihood of a future explosive phreatic eruption there.

I go to Kona side of Big Island. Those mountains block all the clouds so almost never rains there. You can always see clouds in the mountains but never makes it to the beaches. Then you go to Hilo side and the rains are incredible.

Indeed. It is quite a contrast.

Have you ever driven the Saddle Road? That’s an experience!

But in Hilo we have just come off a 2 month drought - it was strange indeed. Yes, Hilo has lots of rain, but it also has lots of sun.

Yes, I drove Saddle Road when the rental car companies used to tell you not to drive it. But I did it anyway and my wife was so nervous that we would break down and then the insurance company would be mad at us.

Amazing island and my favorite part of Hawaii. Some parts of the island, you'd think you were in Texas, with all the cattle and prairie.

I drove it alone, after my best friend died in Hilo.

It’s paved now, and no longer “restricted” but still quite fascinating in its loneliness.

I love the Big Island. It is so different from the stereotypical “Hawai’i”.

One day, when I’m really, really rich, I’m gonna be in a position to jump on a plane and climb to the top of the mountain and ride down on my snowboard...

On Sunday I will find out at church just exactly what the snow situation is there. In the whole state of Hawaii there is only one licensed Snow Plow driver and he is a regular at our church.
