When Iraqi tribal leaders came to D.C. looking for help against ISIL, the White House refused. Then the former president made a call.
Late in the evening of Sunday, January 18, an eleven-member delegation of tribal leaders from Iraqs western Anbar Province arrived in Washington, D.C. Just as their plane was touching down, Islamic State units back in Iraq attacked the compound of one of the delegations senior leaders, Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha, killing nine Iraqi police officers and wounding 28 of the sheiks guards. A nearby Iraqi military unit failed to respond to repeated calls for help.
The brutal attack underscored the purpose of the Anbar delegations visit: The tribal leaders believed that they could defeat the Islamic Statebut only if the Obama administration would agree to ship them weapons directly, bypassing Iraqs untrustworthy Ministry of Defense. Yet after they arrived in Washington the tribal leaders found themselves thwarted at every turn in their efforts to meet with high-level administration officials. They were told they would have to take up these matters with new Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and would have to rely for weapons on those provided to them by Abadis ministry of defense.
Thats when George W. Bush called Abu Risha at his hotel in Washington.
Its startling enough for a Sunni tribal leader to get a call from a former U.S. presidentand even more so from Bush, who has been especially reluctant to interfere in world affairs since leaving office.
SNIP
Shia militias than Sunni tribesmen. Bush urged Abu Risha to extend his stay and meet with retired Gen. David Petraeus, as well as with Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham. According to Abu Risha, Bush pledged that he would do everything I can to help him get a hearing in Washington.

Whoa! a former president acting more like a president than the “Pres__ent” in the White Hut. This is the second time I heard President Bush getting involve. Remember that “workplace violence” that occur. Who went to visit the wounded?
Dude! What I just posted to you about the notification of the House Armed Services committee, about Israel taking out Syria’s nuke facility in ‘07!
Obama is refusing help to Jordan. Obama is refusing help to the Kurds. Obama is refusing help to the Iraqis.
It’s almost as though Obama supports ISIS.
And he always calls it ISIL—meaning that he supports their marching into Israel and killing every Jew.
Isn’t it strange? After killing 57 million of their own babies, the American people elected a Jew-hating mass murderer as their “President.”
Theres a law somewhere - W abided by it - that says POTUS must notify personally two chairmen of the House Armed Services if an emergency war act must be undertaken. On Sept 6, 2007, when Israel took out the Syrian nuke facility under construction, W called Pete Hoekstra and the rat member of the committee.
We didnt hear about that Syrian plant being vaporized until three days after it happened.
Agreed.
He is trying to wreck our nation.
Does he support ISIS? I thought he supported Iran, which supposedly is against ISIS? Perhaps he just does NOT support the “moderates” anywhere, or our allies?
My W post was for those of us wondering what happened in al-Baghdadi today, near Asad Air Base.
Obama hates this country so much that every one of its enemies is his friend of opportunity.
Obama’s goal is to make sure Iraq remains a failed state.
Russia’s goal is to keep Iran in its pocket and us out of Iraq.
Obama was mentored by a guy who idolized the Russian Red Army...
He’s confusing if you think of him as a muslim but pretty easy to figure out if you never forget he thinks like a communist.
There was an attempted attack .. IT FAILED ..!!!!!!!
We’ve been praying Isaiah 54:17 - “No weapon formed against you shall prosper.” GOD IS FAITHFUL.
Local San Diego station KUSI just put out that story at just a little after 10 pm here. It might have been known earlier, but I wasn’t watching any news until now.

I know Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha, he is a stand up moderate. (I had dinner at his villa in Baghdad in 2010.) He had some good scotch as I recall... His brother was the Sheik Risha who was killed, not long after he saddled up in Anbar to work with the Marines and not against us. Sheik Ahmed, who’s and engineer by education, took over the cause. We need to be arming the Sunni tribes and the Kurds directly. Obviously the Shia run government can’t be trusted with it a near puppet to Iran. I hope the arming could be done, perhaps through a third party Arab country, such as Jordan, through the back door..
Thanks, I was wondering if they were closely related.
quoting the uk guardian:
Al-Qaida earlier killed four of Abu Rishas brothers and six other relatives for working with the U.S. military.
