I've used Serif products before, good stuff!

I've always found The Gimp to be pretty good (also free)
To: martin_fierro
I’ve used PS for years, so I find Gimp very clunky. I’m sure it’s because it’s not PS.

Oh, those who buy overpriced stuff (i.e. Apple products) cannot afford Photoshop? What are they they doing? Spending all their money on Mac products and Starbucks latte?

I somehow missed the “free” because it costs according to the page I saw.

Thanks. Looks fantastic. I’ve been using Aperture and Pixelmator ($30) for very casual editing, enhancement, and cleanup. I see Serif is free for the beta version, but will cost $50 upon release. Still an incredible bargain.

Oh, those who buy overpriced stuff (i.e. Apple products) cannot afford Photoshop? What are they they doing? Spending all their money on Mac products and Starbucks latte? Photoshop, which I used to upgrade every other release, has gone to a "rental" model, where you need to pay Adobe every month. To hell with that!
The market will jump on a good alternative, provided it still has the power of Photoshop (which is considerable).
By the way, I hang on to my Macs for years, as they seem to last about 50% longer or more than equivalent PCs. So the Total Cost of Ownership works out to be not too bad at all. (But thanks for the snide insult, anyways.)

I ran a catalog department for 5-1/2 years. Print and web content. Maintained a 3,000 page catalog, indexes and supplement, created monthly and seasonal promotions (some were 1,000 pages+), created/maintained all the images for 47,000 items.
I had Adobe Creative Suite and I preferred to use Gimp.
1 application could open any document, not need for the bloated “bridge” software.
I grew to love Image Magic for sizing the images. Powerful command line tool. I used it to size 80,000+ images for the initial print to web conversion. Started the program after 5:00 PM and when I came to work in the morning, it was done.
I am primarily a Linux computer user now. First used that OS in 1984-85. I seldom fire up a Windows machine any more.
