Apple, in its flush of new, bigger iPhone 6 handsets, has been selling record numbers of its older and newer model smartphones in the last few months, and now it’s passed another significant milestone: it has managed to overtake sales of Android devices in the key market of the U.S. for the first time in three years.

LOL ... doesn’t look like “nothing” to me ... :-) ...

Apple Posted The Biggest Quarterly Profit In History
http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2015/01/28/apple-posted-the-biggest-quarterly-profit-in-history/

Apple AAPL +1.28% broke several records Tuesday with its fiscal first-quarter earnings report. The most remarkable of them all: posting the biggest quarterly profit in history.

Its $18 billion in net income easily beat the $16.2 billion that Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom posted in the first quarter of 2011, and the $16.18 billion that Royal Dutch Shell earned in the second quarter of 2008. (The full list of record corporate results is here.)

These are stunning numbers, and the result is that even after investors had baked their expectations for a blowout quarter into Apple’s shares, the stock looked set to pop before the market open on Wednesday.

Apple was 9% higher at $119.02 in pre-market trading, putting it within scraping distance of its all time high of $119.27.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook relayed a sense of his own astonishment in prepared remarks he made during a conference call with analysts on Tuesday. “Demand for the iPhone has been staggering,” he said. “The volume is hard to comprehend.”

“Sales have already plummeted, friend. That’s why Apple - who once dominated - now only holds 13% of the market.”

Yes, poor, poor apple. All they have left to cry over is the majority of the profits in the industry... and the largest corporate profit in all recorded history. According to your post, they are now crying over their beer.

“Also, profits are not as important as you’d think. Look at Amazon’s zero-profit growth model. Dominating the market is more important, and Apple has already lost that edge. Just like they did in the PC market.”

I’m betting that you can envision a world with more than one profit model?
A team can dominate, but unless there is profit, it is just motion.

Your post sounds like rationalization of a lack of profitable business model on the Android side.
But there are profits. They go to Google, who like Microsoft dominates search. Unfortunately, this leaves the mobile device manufacturers fighting each other while Google rakes it in on the search side.

So yes, there are similarities with the PC market, but vastly different.

I’m not sure what you’re smoking, but I’m betting you’re in Colorado...

Analysts say Apple has beaten Samsung to become world’s largest smartphone vendor
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3252085/posts

Samsung is refusing to release concrete figures, but some industry experts are giving the win to Apple.

After recording the biggest quarterly profit by any company ever, Apple might have earned itself another accolade: world’s largest smartphone vendor. It’s clear that the iPhone maker had a bumper quarter, reporting record sales of 74.5 million smartphones. However, Samsung is only saying that it sold 95 million total handsets, of which, it says, somewhere between 71 million and 75 million (the “high 70 percent”) were smartphones.

So has Apple finally beaten Samsung? It’s impossible to say with absolute certainty. Samsung isn’t likely to give up any more information on the topic, and analysts and industry experts are hedging their bets accordingly. Some are marking it as a dead heat while others are claiming Apple as the winner. Counterpoint Research, which polls global distributors for its figures, says the iPhone maker is definitely ahead — pegging Samsung’s shipments at only 73.8 million. Ben Bajarin, an analyst for Creative Strategies also gives the win to Apple (see chart above), but Strategy Analytics claims both vendors shipped 74.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter last year.

And here come the personal insults. Typical of the cult of Apple when the facts hurt them.

The chart you showed demonstrates the exact point I made - temporary bump in SALES while cultists rush to get what Android users have been enjoying for years. They will drive sales up in the near term, getting bigger screens, because it is now just available. After that SALES plummer. But the SALES chart is not market share. I’m sorry you are having difficulty understanding that. Maybe your iPhone can explain it.

Take the slope of the last six quarters for Samsung and compare the slope of the quarters before that ... “down” ... :-) ...

Why does your chart end at the 1st quarter of 2014?

Never buy a phone that you can’t turn off completely by removing the battery.

Never buy a phone whose battery you can’t replace.

That's actually one of the few criticisms of iThings that I agree with. That, and their lack of SD card slots.

I'm just glad there is a lot of competition in this space. It's good for everybody.

You’re such an Android fanbois!

“The chart you showed demonstrates the exact point I made - temporary bump in SALES while cultists rush to get what Android users have been enjoying for years.”

If that is all it is, why are android users converting to the iPhone to get what they already had?

“They will drive sales up in the near term, getting bigger screens, because it is now just available.”

Your view supposes a static future where Apple never innovates. Their history says otherwise.

“After that SALES plummet.”

Keep saying that and eventually you may be correct.

Interesting why you chose to change the headline. Android also sold on LG, Motorola, HTC, Google, Amazon, Sony....

Apple still has more apps available. Another thing I notice, at least here in Canada, and Ipad is roughly the same price as a Samsung pad. My daughter is saving up for one and I suggested by get a Samsung when you can get a much more fun, easier to use Ipad for the same price?

I actually have already been correct on this before. Once, in the 80s/early 90s, when Apple lost the PC market, and shortly after released the original iPhone, and then lost majority market share to Android.

I guess third time’s a charm.

Yes, things certainly change.

Microsoft is not the powerhouse it was, windows computers are a commodity, Apple is partnering with IBM and has revenue streams flowing into its coffers in a thousand ways...

And android companies fight for profit scaps like dogs under Apple’s dinner table...

Apple is printing money while you swear they are on a terrible road.

You are a true believer. I guess that’s OK.

I view Apple like an electric car maker. They *dominate* their specific market niche, which comprises about 13% of the global market. They make tons of money in that niche, because they are the only player in that niche and they overcharge cult-like followers who will pay anything for a car with their logo on it. They have no direct competition to drive their price down.

But all the other companies who make internal combustion engine cars comprise the other 87% of the market. The car makers may not be as profitable as that one electric car manufacturer, but the demand for their product amongst the people is clearly much, much higher.

People clearly want internal combustion engine cars. If that makes them a commodity, so be it.

In any case, I certainly support your right to appear on Apple threads and express your beliefs.
