I don’t believe the Tolstoy picture is genuine - the children are smiling. ;-)

Don't cry for him too much. The little bastard was doing his level best to kill Americans and no doubt did. I've known dozens of WW2 veterans who told me of seeing their buddies killed and wounded by little Hitler Youth savages who thought nothing of popping out from a doorway and letting loose with a handheld anti-tank rocket launcher and immolating an American tank or armored vehicle , killing Americans, in some cases these Americans were trapped in their vehicles and burned alive. Then they'd throw down the weapon and shout “Kamerade’’ and start asking for cigarettes and saying how much they opposed Hitler. One vet told me flat out, "We'd cut them down in a heartbeat''.

The picture of the SS men was taken on November 9,1937 at The Feldherrenhalle(’’Hall Of Heroes’’) in Munich. It was a Nazi shrine built to commemorate Hitlers abortive ‘’Beer Hall Putsch’’. The large red objects are memorials dedicated to the sixteen ‘’Feldherren’’(heroes’’) killed in the attempt. Up until 1939 the ceremony commemorated the event as well as serving as an induction ceremony for new SS men. It wasn’t a photo that needed to be colorized as the event was photographed in color.

I saw him as a child, which he was.
War brings out the worst in everyone and The Hitler Youth were brainwashed IMHO.
He was younger than most of my grandchildren.

Believe it or not I had a book with a photo of that kid and his name but I don't know what became of it. Probably tossed it out inadvertently in a Spring cleaning or something. The phenomena of children waging war against them, in uniform using weapons of war; machine guns, artillery and such was something American soldiers had never encountered before and at first it was hard to accept and many American soldiers lost their lives. The Nazis had indeed brainwashed them and led them to trade on the American sense of fair play and compassion. Many American soldiers were killed by these kids and adults who faked surrender only to bring out a weapon and shoot them down. But war is hell and as I said, I've known veterans who encountered the Hitler Youth and 14 year-old SS ''men'' who tried to kill them and many times succeeded . Some they shot in the heat of battle and felt sickened by it, others felt no remorse but to their credit they did there level best, at the risk of their own lives and sometimes against orders, to take them alive as this picture shows.
