Apple iPhone Grabbing 50 Percent of Smartphone Activations

A new smartphone market report reveals Apple is dominating as iPhones represented nearly half of the new device activations in the fourth quarter of 2014. "Apple had virtually double the sales of Samsung, and five times that of LG. No other brand accounted for as much as 5 percent of U.S. sales," says Lowitz. "The Amazon Fire and Blackberry smartphones registered slight share, which we attribute to random sample fluctuation as much as actual sales."

The report found iPhone activations nearly doubled from the previously quarter. Apple smartphones accounted for about 28 percent of new activations in third quarter of 2014.

The research firm says about 86 percent of new activations came from current iPhone users upgrading to new devices, which illustrates the ongoing allegiance of Apple fans.

While Samsung is still top dog overall in the mobile market, the Galaxy maker's handsets accounted for just about 26 percent of new activations in the fourth quarter.

I’m confused. They surveyed 500 people to get their report? Why not just get the sales reports for the companies? How can you be accurate with a sampling of 500 people for the entire planet?

Good point. I guess they will know for sure from the Apple report that comes out in 2 days.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that Apple is at an all time high on sales of iPhone 6.

The thing is that I think about 1/4 of people left Samsung? The only question is why?

This just makes no sense why would consumer reports issue such an article when real data is just a short time away.

I can see doing such if your are trying to predict who will buy BEFORE a new item comes out but to say they have accurate figures on real purchases by sampling 500 people for sales over most of the civilized world is rolling the dice on your credibility big time.

In the US market. Vs 48% last year.

http://9to5mac.com/2014/01/30/apple-regains-lead-over-samsung-in-us-smartphone-market-thanks-to-new-iphones/

Samsung went down from 31% to 26%. My guess is it lost 3 points to LG and 2 points to Apple. The small Apple % market share gain is a little surprising, given the significant demand for the various flavors of the Iphone 6.

US market share. Globally, Apple's market share is in the low to mid-teens. Higher for tablets, lower for phones.

From your link: “iOS customers have higher carrier bills, spending more on voice, texts, and data than Android buyers,” said Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP. “Over half of iOS buyers spend over $100 per month, compared to one-third of Android customers. And, about one quarter of Android customers spend under $50 per month, compared to only 7% of iOS buyers.”

I am confused why iPhones have higher carrier bills? They do the same things so why would data and phone and text services be almost double?

They might be heavier users. If I had to guess, I'd say road warriors (people who do a lot of traveling on business) tend to buy Iphones, which is why the usage is so lopsidedly heavy on the Ios platform. Apple might have a cool factor, so sales people feel they look better using one. Maybe the ergonomics are superior, so heavy users, like people who do a lot of travel, prefer it. Or it might simply be first mover advantage - the first people who bought pricey Iphones were the people who needed it (again, frequent travelers), and they've stuck with it just because they're familiar with it.

They sell these market studies to industry members, who develop production plans, pricing strategy and so on based in part on them. You're just seeing the headline. The underlying data is provided to subscribers, who pay good money for it.

Bottom line is time is of the essence. Decision-makers need the info before earnings reports come out, and the earnings reports don’t all come out at the same time.

The answer is ... very simply ... the iPhone is very much easier to use with these services and is more of a joy to use, which prompts more usage.

These are not road warriors, but ordinary people, and grandmas and grandpas (and I know quite a few of those using iPhones) ... using their iPhones and doing ordinary and everyday things in and around their homes and shopping and communicating — in other words ... doing very, very “ordinary” things.

Well our family went from an iPhone 4 to a 6+ and from a iPhone 5 to a 6. We love 'em. Tacked on the new iPad a month or so later. Great machine.

The amount of usage they're talking about is road warrior-ish. I'm sure many people buy Iphones just because they like the way it works. But the amount of activity these studies are talking about - these Iphone users are using them in place of computers, probably in the car, on a plane, at a restaurant, in a meeting, and so on - places where it might be inconvenient to whip out a laptop computer.

I have an iPad and an iPhone, and what you just described is what I whip out the iPad for (along with the iPhone too), and doing so as a grandpa (as other grandpas and grandmas that I know do too) ... and NOT as a road warrior, but in the course of my very ordinary life about town ... :-) ...

Now a number of years back, I was more of a road warrior (but before the iPhone), and I used my IBook, along with a stand-alone GPS that tied into my iBook with Bluetooth, and I tied into a mapping program ... so used the iBook and GPS (and other programs on the iBook) in the same way as the iPhone and iPad (now), except that I’m not in the road warrior mode as before ... and neither are the other grandmas and grandpas that I know ... :-) ...

As was pointed out there ... :-) ...

A Russian Journalist claims Snowden’s attorney says that Snowden will not use an iPhone because it has “secret backdoor spyware” installed in it! Keep in mind this is coming from RUSSIA where Apple has just raised prices in the App store and Russia is actively discouraging the purchase of Apple products by its citizens. . . and a statue of Steve Jobs was just dismantled. In addition, the last time that Snowden made such a claim was in 2013 when he released a document to back-up his claim. . . a document in which the NSA had developed spyware for the iPhone called “DROPOUTJEEP” which caused quite a flurry at that time. . . including the German government dropping the use of iOS products. However, lost in all that hype was the fact that that document was written prior to its distribution on October 1, 2008, four months after Apple opened the App Store six and a half years ago! In addition, since then the iPhone has been gone over by multiple developers and no one has found any “backdoors” in the software.

This was an exploit for the FIRST MODEL iPhone and in addition, as specified on the document, REQUIRED physical possession of the iPhone to install the spyware! DROPOUTJEEP specifically states it is an “implant” exploit. . . requiring “close access methods” to deploy. i.e. physical access to the iPhone to install the spyware. Someone had to intercept a specific iPhone before the target to be spied on received it. . . or they had to get to it after delivery to secretly install the spyware. That was the state of SNOWDEN’s knowledge about the iPhone. . . there is no reason to believe that he suddenly has new knowledge to add. PERIOD.

Finally, it is FUD Season. . . Tuesday is when Apple will announce the results of the 1st quarter of the 2015 fiscal year. . . and as usual, for three weeks prior to any Apple event of such a nature, FUD will be flying hot and heavy. — PING!

Watch out for “Putin propaganda” ... LOL ...

“How can you be accurate with a sampling of 500 people for the entire planet?”

You can’t. Besides, I’m guessing this “sample” is U.S. only, so the results are only moderately interesting, since the rest of the world combined has a bigger total share of smartphones, as well as different market predilections than U.S. buyers.

The other moderately interesting factoid, is that it appears Microsoft smartphones are nearly non-existent statistically, at least in the U.S., which is yet more proof Microsoft’s mobile “strategy” is a complete failure and that Microsoft will NEVER compete in the mobile world, which means their big Cortana push will alienate Windows 10 desktop/laptop users just as much as their insane and doomed attempt to put a touch-centric cell phone interface on every PC on earth.
