Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Linked To Physiological Viral Shifts

Washington University School of Medicine researchers have found that those patients who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases also had a greater variety of viruses contained within their digestive systems than they found in the bowels of health volunteers. This, they believe, suggests that viruses somehow play a role in the development of this condition.

...

“This is the tip of the iceberg. A significant portion of the viral DNA we identified in these patients is unfamiliar to us—it comes from newly identified viruses we don’t know much about,” explains senior study author Herbert W. Virgin. “We have a great deal of groundwork to do, including sequencing the genetic material of these viruses and learning how they interact with the gut and gut bacteria, before we can determine if changes in the virome cause these conditions or results from them.”

...

“Much of the increased viral diversity in participants with inflammatory bowel diseases was in the form of bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria and can incorporate themselves into the bacteria’s genetic material.”

Anyone with one of this class of ailments needs to try two things before they wander off into gene research:

1. Move to a low carb grain-free diet. In particular, dial intake of gluten-bearing grains to zero (and not just because of gluten, which is not necessarily the biggest problem with these grass seeds).

2. Correct your gut biome, which means adding at least 20 grams of prebiotic fiber (aka resistant starch) to your diet, and typically doing a 60 day course of quality probiotics (actual gut bugs). What’s on room temperature store shelves is highly unlikely to be quality PB.

The WBB site is only selling books, but you can do this without books.
