I remember this, and I even remember the numerous photos of sailors making a rude gesture while held captive by communists:

As a child, I thought the gesture was inappropriate. Now that I live under a communist president, one who frequently uses that gesture toward Americans who value freedom, I understand and thoroughly approve of the Hawaiian Good Luck sign - at least when directed toward communists.

I’m currently reading ‘Second in Command’ by Edward R. Murphy jr, who was the XO on the Pueblo. He doesn’t paint a very good picture leading up to the capture.
