[Six+ years old story] Europe plunged into energy crisis as Russia cuts off gas supply via Ukraine
Daily Mail ^ | circa 2009 or before | Robert Lea

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.

Europe ASKED for this. Talks/meeting were takiing place years ago and pipeline supplies from Russia was the preference over the unsofisticated Americans/Canadians. LNG plants could have been built rapidly and could have eliminated Russia’s influence.

Enjoy Europe....you did it to yourselfs!

I thought Ukraine was independent, oops, that’s right Obama never supported a free Ukraine and allowed Putin to march in and take over and shoot down airliners with zero retribution.

From what I read in the story, UK supplies won’t be affected much, if at all. Seems like he’s stiffing the countries that really can’t do anything about it if push came to shove. Though.....I don’t think I’d want to piss off the Turks unnecessarily.

I don’t wish freezing winters and no heat on anyone.

I agree! Having done cold-weather training exercises in Norway, I do NOT wish that crap on ANYONE!

I wish the EU and US leaders had approved LNG ports a long time ago. Russian leverage over the world economy would be greatly reduced.

You would think that these two items would be "no brainer's," but alas, you forget that opening up LNG supplies would make some private industries rich and might even create jobs in that evil gas industry - there is NO WAY the world will allow that! And, as far as not wanting Russia influence, the NWO people want us all EQUAL, so we can't be shaming and putting people down, just because they invade three countries and turn off the gas to a few million across Europe...no, nope, not gonna do it!!

And the really asinine thing is, Russia despite it’s past, is a natural ally candidate for the West. We’re talking Caucasian people. We’re talking many Christians in the populace. We’re talking about whether the West or Asia provides more of a threat.

The PEOPLE have natural ally tendencies, but and don't get me wrong, I am not comparing his actions to Nazi Germany, but Putin's PRIDE and woeful need to be a martyr for his people, makes him look very Hitler-esque! He wants Russia and the Russian people to be a world power, even if it means he has to rip the very rug out from underneath the real world-powers.

There is a time to stand alone and thump your chest; there is a time to be a face in the crowd. I think Putin moved too quickly to be independent. His country and their economy was not strong enough to be a self-sufficient world-power. But, he wants it to be, at any cost.

It all started with $15+ billion being pumped into Ukraine by the West, resulting in a midterm coup to tear them away from doing business with Russia.

Expanding NATO in the 90's was a mistake. Refusing to lease the Crimea to the Russians in the future was the last straw. Putin snapped and did what any great leader would do.

We my friend are the ones who went off half cocked. You put it all so well and in a nutshell, it bears repeating.

Yes, all this will isolate Russia further. And the really asinine thing is, Russia despite it’s past, is a natural ally candidate for the West. We’re talking Caucasian people. We’re talking many Christians in the populace. We’re talking about whether the West or Asia provides more of a threat. We’re also talking about the Islamic threat, something the West and Russia also have in common.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey ......now if that list included Germany or France even.....but it don’t. The oilers are trying to hurt the frackers. The Poles are fracking now. My question is why isn’t Russia fracking?

This happens just as the UK is having it’s coldest night in a century...

I don't think that's correct. Temperature range today in London for example is 37 to 48 degrees. That's right about normal.

Who had high hopes? The soviet union was put together by Russia and is communist with the heritage of Lenin and stalin. It is a bit better than what it was as the soviet union back in the day but not by much. I have family and friends who traveled there recently and during the cold war. There are degrees of bad.

Any short, medium or long term suffering is preferable to perpetual slavery.

Some, including a few here just don't get that.

Putin is begging for greater sanctions and the world should respond with the crippling blow this Russian midget deserves. Russians keep proving they are the stupidest people on earth.

With the massive Global Warming going on in Europe as we speak, why do they need the Gas in the first place? Aren’t the windmills providing All the energy they need?

Expect more of these ships and LNG supplies ending the brilliant one’s Wile E. Coyote move. Putin isn’t playing chess he is playing Russian roulette all by himself.

Interestingly, southern EU countries are the weakest economically, like Greece.

Russia may suffer short term money loss from lack of gas sales, but if he manages to split the EU apart, he may consider the short-term issues a worthwhile sacrifice for long-term gain of collapsing the EU.

Most likely because Russia could get its oil much cheaper via conventional means. If prices stay low, they’ll look very smart for that move - since they wouldn’t have wasted the investment in fracking.

For us, it still made sense with high oil prices...but if they were always $50, I doubt the work Fracking would even exist today (we’d just be importing tons more oil).
