In the grand scheme of things it didn't matter much anyways. Irene Ryan (Granny) died shortly after the show ended. I can't imagine them going on without Granny or God forbid replacing her. In my opinion granny *WAS* the show. Most of the laughs centered around her and how she responded to things. Jethro was next in terms of bringing the funny. Jed and Ellie were mostly supporting characters for the other two. Once in awhile they would be funny on their own, but most of the time they were lead ins to granny and Jethro.

In my opinion Granny *WAS* the show.Like Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz, Irene Ryan's character was practically given a license to steal every scene in The Beverly Hillbillies.
RIP, Donna Douglas.

As far as I’m concerned that was the funniest show ever, and Elly May, well I was in love starting at 11 yrs old.

That’s one heckuva double-barrel. And the shotgun’s pretty nice too.

One of her last performances was on "The Nanny" in which she played herself as a realtor still living at the mansion:

And somehow the very next day she was 81.
RIP she was always sweet on that show.

    It’s called the rural purge.
Norman Lear and Lear-influenced propaganda shows began to replace the rural themed conservative values shows in the 70’s.
It changed the US for the worse more than we realize.

I remember on one episode, Jethro was going to hold a séance, in order to contact the spirit world.
Miss Jane: “Jethro, you’re not a medium!”
Jethro: “I know, I’m an extra large!”
