A Guilty Elite: Immigration Beyond Economics
Chronicles Magazine ^ | DECEMBER 12, 2014 | Peter Brimelow

Posted on 01/01/2015 12:41:48 PM PST by Pelham

America’s immigration enthusiasts, which is to say her entire ruling class, have such untrammeled access to the mainstream media that they are able to launch obviously absurd memes in shamelessly coordinated fashion. Thus, in the wake of the Republican triumph in the 2014 midterm elections—which of course had no effect on them at all; being an immigration enthusiast (to adapt the old movie Love Story) means never having to say you’re sorry—The New Republic ran “A Radical Solution to Global Income Inequality: Make the U.S. More Like Qatar” (November 6), by two University of Chicago academics, Eric A. Posner and Glen Weyl. They argued, seemingly with straight faces, that First World countries have a moral duty to admit Third World immigrants approaching levels seen in Persian Gulf states like Qatar (upward of 80 percent).

The New York Times then published “A Strategy for Rich Countries: Absorb More Immigrants” (November 8), by the George Mason University libertarian economist Tyler Cowen, making an almost identical argument, this time because recent projections suggest that the global population may not, after all, be peaking out; and wealth needs to be shared.

(That bit about population not peaking out is really interesting. For years, immigration enthusiasts like Ben Wattenberg have been saying that immigration into the United States should not be cut because it would slow all by itself as global population peaked out. Now, the opposite condition is being claimed. Problems change, but the solution is always the same: more immigration!)

As a lifelong financial journalist and a battle-scarred veteran of the immigration wars, I know from bitter experience that, although everyone claims to be interested in what the dismal science has to say about immigration, actually they’re not interested in it at all. They really want to talk about, or more commonly emote

America was full enough many decades ago, JFK had a dream, and today we are living in it, as the left imports voters by the millions and destroys our once great country.

“However, if there is one man who can take the most credit for the 1965 act, it is John F. Kennedy. Kennedy seems to have inherited the resentment his father Joseph felt as an outsider in Boston’s WASP aristocracy. He voted against the McCarran-Walter Act of 1952, and supported various refugee acts throughout the 1950s.

In 1958 he wrote a book, A Nation of Immigrants, which attacked the quota system as illogical and without purpose, and the book served as Kennedy’s blueprint for immigration reform after he became president in 1960.
In the summer of 1963, Kennedy sent Congress a proposal calling for the elimination of the national origins quota system. He wanted immigrants admitted on the basis of family reunification and needed skills, without regard to national origin.

After his assassination in November, his brother Robert took up the cause of immigration reform, calling it JFK’s legacy. In the forward to a revised edition of A Nation of Immigrants, issued in 1964 to gain support for the new law, he wrote, “I know of no cause which President Kennedy championed more warmly than the improvement of our immigration policies.” Sold as a memorial to JFK, there was very little opposition to what became known as the Immigration Act of 1965.”

I remember America before 1965 and you’re quite right.

I can’t think of anything that has done as much lasting damage as that act. The enabling of massive illegal immigration by both Republicans and Democrats is a subset of what that immigration bill set in motion.

Thank you for this, it was a heartening read at a time when what he describes in the media and among our elites is such a depressing reality. I surely do hope the sane people can take the wheel on this issue in Washington.

He needs to give it up on the libertarians though.

Beyond economics—that is to say, to anyone other than a dogmatic libertarian—it’s obvious that the Posner-Weyl-Cowen proposal is a recipe for social conflict and utter disaster.

Just look at how it is now. If the same pace of invasion and 'diversity' continues how will it be in say 5 years or even 2 or 3 years?

Chronicles has been on this issue for a very long time. And Peter Brimelow manages a website dedicated to it.

With the GOP establishment now colluding with Obama over amnesty the issue of mass immigration is finally on the radar of the American people.

It’s now or never to to do something about it. I had a front row seat to watch California be transformed into a third world colony and it happened very quickly.

If Obama and the GOPe win this one and refuse to deport the millions of foreign citizens illegally hiding in the United States then the culture of the country itself will be permanently changed within twenty years. But maybe people just don’t care. I know most of our politicians don’t.

Warning though, his website has been listed on Southern Poverty Law as racist.

Then what happened to California will happen to the rest of the United States.

It happened very quickly here. English is even being displaced. You first notice it when the billboards and radio stations switch over.

That’s what happens when another culture moves in in a huge way, with the collaboration of politicians who refuse to send foreign citizens back home.

Instead of enforcing the law these quislings do all that they can to make life easier for lawbreaking foreigners. California is now issuing drivers licenses to illegals and creating a fund to give them medical care since at this point they don’t qualify for Obamacare.

They say most of the new jobs have gone to foreign workers, which is why most Americans are saying “what recovery?” so he’s right, there isn’t an economic ground to defend this naivety and irresponsibility on.

“Warning though, his website has been listed on Southern Poverty Law as racist.”

Considering that the SPLC routinely does that to people that they themselves hate it doesn’t mean anything.

The SPLC is itself a hate group, they just get a pass on what they do because their targets are people that the mainstream media doesn’t like either, and the MSM willingly repeat SPLC smears.

Take a walking tour of pretty much any community and you will find that people have no idea anymore about their own neighbors. We are no longer a country of people who gather on a regular basis to compare notes and swap news, everyone is inside watching the tube, or tapping on a keyboard ;)

It is a curious thing that zero hate groups are identified as Islamic but a number are listed as “Christian” this, that, or the other.

To a degree that depends upon your job and how much it takes you into contact with your neighborhood. But I think that you’re right to assume that many people have little or no idea of who their neighbors are.

I try to get to know most of my neighbors. It’s always good to have people nearby that you can count on if something comes up. But I’ve had a lot of them move out of the state in recent years because SoCal is no longer comfortable for them.

Brimelow laments Libertarians but it is absolutely amazing to me how many rank-n-file ‘Conservatives’ are all but ignoring this or even worse have drank the Marxist kool-aid.

We’ve got a good group of folks around here and I’m trying to figure out what would be a good excuse to institute a monthly potluck dinner. Best of luck to you and your community :)
