Primetime TV Shows That Flopped Find International Success On Viki
As a global TV site, Viki doesnt just offer subtitles to make popular TV shows understandable, its now helping shows that dont do well in their home countries capture loyal fans from unsuspecting places in the world. Filipino shows, for example, are finding success in Japan. When the Japanese film, Tragedy of W first aired in 1984, it flopped in its home country, but was a hit once it appeared on Vikiparticularly in Europe. Similarly, the Korean TV show, Playful Kiss, didnt take off in Korea initially, but is now available in nearly 60 languages.
The first show the site added was, Boys Over Flowers, a wildly popular drama from South Korea, where its entertainment industry continues to boom. Now, some of the fastest-growing genres come from Europe, South East Asia, Thailand and Turkey.
Viki has become a matchmaker for TV shows and films that havent found their audiences yet while giving them an infinite shelf life. The sites model presents producers and broadcasters everywhere with the proposition that they can spend more money to make better shows and still be able to distribute them to the rest of the world. The site primarily aims to secure high value content, which includes hundreds of shows that dont get picked up by television broadcasters. ...
Viki, which is a play on the words video, and wiki, because of its crowdsourcing model for subtitling videos, is the third largest global TV site behind YouTube and Hulu. Since licensing in the home market would mean competing against TV site giants, Viki licenses content to the rest of the world. Japanese content doesnt play in Japan, and Korean content doesnt play in Korea. It does, however, curate global content on Netflix and Hulu.

Anyone else notice that the cars in QM productions were always Fords.
He must have gotten a great deal from Ford.
Loved Cannon’s Lincoln even though in real life that car was a lackluster underperformer but he had a phone.
Barnaby Jones cruising for justice in LTDs, at least 2 door.
Don’t forget Efrem Zimbalist Jr. tooling around in FBI Fords.
There are a lot of shows not available here and I can watch them subtitled.
I can not only gain an appreciation for foreign cultures - I can understand the dialogue as a deaf/hearing-impairing person thanks to subtitling.
I think Netflix and Viki have made great strides in unlocking the world’s treasure house of entertainment for viewers’ enjoyment.
True but series was a bit before me. EZ was really good on screen.
His Daughter was hot as a firecracker. I never understood why she never did much other than ‘Remington Steele”.
Both the film and Invaders was heavily played on the Sci-Fi channel back when it started.
Lee Meriwether, yummy.
I remember my mom telling a story from when she worked at Actors Equity in NYC in the late 40’s I believe.
She walked out the front door and right into the arms of Robert Stack. He held her for a couple of minutes to keep her from falling down and apologized profusely. My mom said she practically fainted looking into those beautiful eyes of his (her words). She never forgot that especially when seeing him in a movie holding a leading lady. Quite a thrill for a 20 year old girl I would imagine.
LOL
Robert Stack had a reputation as being one of the genuinely nice guys in Hollywood. He used to have a monthly column on shotguns in Gun World” magazine.
He had once been a world champion shooter. I can’t remember if it was skeet or trap.
Steph was supposedly slated for Robocop but NBC held tight as steel to Remington Steele.
I would have loved to have seen her make it to the big screen.
Remember the aliens funky ‘finger’ somewhere in each show?!
Yes, he was a class act married to the same woman for 40+ years until his death.
ATA sticks in my mind as far as shooting. I believe he edited the Shotgun Digest at one time.
As an FYI, Mom said the worst person she ever came in contact with there was Jerry Lewis. He was always pissed off and yelling about something and it carried across the building and offices.
If I remember right, not all the aliens had the finger problem.
Main sponsor.
Main sponsor for QM
Can 0.00 bend his pinky finger? How about his other tzars?
Quinn Martin had great shows...I loved Barnaby Jones..
