HAYDEN, Idaho—Employees evacuated the Hayden Walmart on Tuesday following a shooting inside the store.

Authorities on the scene around 11:15 a.m. described the shooting as "accidental."

A woman was shopping with four kids, when one of the kids reached into her purse and accidentally discharged the weapon, according to Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies at the scene.

The gunshot killed the 29-year-old woman. Deputies on scene said the child who accidentally fired the handgun was about 2-years-old.

Deputies said the woman and children were in the back of the store near the electronics area when it happened. Deputies said the woman was in town for holidays and is not from the area.

Video surveillance in the store, along with eye witness testimony helped deputies determine that this was an accident.

Authorities said the woman did have a concealed weapons permit.

The store is currently closed.

I hope the same thing. But how will they keep it from the kid? Someday he/she will ask where his/her mother is. They’ll have to come up with some phony story, and every relative and family friend will have to stick to it.

Boy, what a mess.

Of course, you probably know many popular pistols have no ‘safety’, like the M&P Shield for instance. And like a Glock, they can also fire a round without a magazine inserted. The blame should be placed where it is due: on the idiot who allowed the weapon to become accessible to a child. For me, a round in the chamber is not a good idea, though some can argue convincingly that it’s the only way to CCW.

A broken Glock isn’t even right once a day.

My 226, before it tumbled over in the canoe, hated me. I finally learned to shoot with just the tip of my finger on the trigger.

No external safety. With a round chambered it takes a good amount of force to double action the first shot.

If it was a double action pistol, seems this poor woman had the hammer up as its hard to imagine a 2 year old with enough strength to yank a double action.

Kinda like leaving the car running with a toddler in it.

“I think my 2 year old would shoot and kill me too. But I am not dumb enough to allow him anywhere near a loaded gun.
What a shame.”

Wait. . .what. . .a shame that he hasn’t shot you?

;-)

I use a Saf-T-Blok on my carry Glock.

you are right, most small revolvers have a long heavy trigger. But I can’t see someone being dumb enough to have it in a purse single action.

Or a hot Glock with no external safety.

Not a Glock fan, no a DA only fan.

DA/SA Stage 2 carry.

Yup. The Second Amendment comes with an unspoken rider that you have to use your brain.

That's the most effective safety of them all.

I was thinking don’t keep it in something your child could grab it from. There are ccw holsters women can wear. Plus with all the other crap in a purse you don’t want to be fishing for it when you need it.

Well said.

I bet the little 2 year old thought Mommys purse was the source of treats.

There’s no way the child won’t know. He’ll be reminded by the other traumatized kids. Most likely they won’t be diplomatic about it either. They’ll probably be taking a lot of hurt and anger out on him. :(

I didn't see anything in the article that said whether the firearm was a semi-auto or a revolver. I could see where the kid could have been tugging on a set of car keys on a keyring, and snagged them on the trigger of either type weapon.

Every revolver that I have handled has a relatively heavy, double action trigger pull (as compared to a semi-auto) that takes more than a "tug" to go bang.
