The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

It’s the most, wonderful time, of the year....Hi all, hope your holidays are dreamy...I’m back from a quick trip to Atlanta and ready for some OTR. This is the last BB thread of 2014. Thanks for being here and may 2015 give you everything you seek.

Lineups don’t get much stronger than tonight’s....Jack Benny...the awesome Phil Harris and Alice Faye...Burns and Allen are classic...and a solid last hour- best listened to in the dark- of Mysterious Traveler and Inner Sanctum.

How you doing?

Hello, FRiends! Thanks, Vision!

It's a Happy New Year show with a "Mysterious Traveler" and an "Inner Sanctum." And, it looks like the "Inner Sanctum" is a lesson in exercising moderation in New Year's Eve libations. We have a sad New Year's Eve-set "Dragnet" with a policeman getting shot. Coincidence with New Year's approaching or the recent barbaric headlines? Hmmm...

These brief synopses are used with permission from the RadioGOLDINdex © 2014 J. David Goldin.

7:00 PM Eastern War Time Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. November 11, 1956. CBS net. "The Big Scoop Matter". Sustaining. The first show after the five-days-a-week series of programs ended on November 2, 1956. A crusading reporter is murdered before he can expose a national gambling syndicate. Bob Bailey, Virginia Gregg, Les Tremayne, Dan Cubberly (announcer), Russell Thorson, Barney Phillips, Stacy Harris, Larry Thor, Parley Baer. 24:56. Audio condition: Very good. Complete.

7:30 Dragnet. March 8, 1951. NBC net. "Big New Year's". Commercials deleted. On New Year's Eve (despite the March broadcast date) a police officer is shot and killed. Jack Webb, Barton Yarborough, George Fenneman (announcer). 26:25. Audio condition: Excellent. Otherwise complete.

8:00 Gunsmoke. January 1, 1956. CBS net. "Pucket's New Year". Sponsored by: Chesterfield, L & M. Jed Larner has left Ira Pucket out on the prairie, where his foot becomes badly frozen and is cut off by Doc. Feeling that he's less than a man, Pucket decides to rob a bank! The script was used on the program again on January 5, 1958 (see cat. #52149) and January 4, 1959 (see cat. #52107). The script was also used on the Gunsmoke television series on January 5, 1957. The system cue is added live. William Conrad, John Meston (writer), Ralph Moody, James Nusser, Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis, Norman Macdonnell (producer, director), Tom Hanley (sound patterns), Bill James (sound patterns), Rex Koury (composer, conductor), George Fenneman (commercial spokesman), Parley Baer, George Walsh (announcer). 25:35. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete as above.

8:30 The Jell-O Program Starring Jack Benny. December 31, 1939. Red net. Sponsored by: Jell-O. Jack's girlfriend, Gladys Zybysko (heard for the first time), stands him up for their New Year's date. The show has a strangely bittersweet ending. A similar script was used on the program of January 1, 1950 (see cat. # ). Jack Benny, Don Wilson, Phil Harris and His Orchestra, Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day, Andy Devine, Harry Baldwin, Ed Beloin (writer, performer), Edward Marr (doubles), Benny Rubin (doubles), Blanche Stewart, Bill Morrow (writer). 29:32. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

9:00 The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. December 26, 1948. NBC net. Sponsored by: Rexall. How come everyone has gotten a Christmas present from Rexall...except Phil? When the present finaly arrives...it's in pieces! What was it? Phil sings, "Keep In The Middle Of The Road." Phil Harris, Alice Faye, Ray Singer (writer), Dick Chevillat (writer), Robert North, Elliott Lewis, Walter Scharf and His Orchestra, Gale Gordon, Bill Forman (announcer), Jeanine Roos, Lois Corbett, Anne Whitfield, Paul Phillips (producer, director), Griff Barnett (Rexall druggist). 29:31. Audio condition: Very good to excellent. Complete.

9:30 Burns & Allen 01/03/46 New Year's Resolution (Maxwell House) (NBC) (29:22). Synopsis is missing from the Index.

10:00 The Mysterious Traveler. January 5, 1947. Mutual net. "New Year's Nightmare". Sustaining. A man goes on a year-end bender and wakes up a year later married to a strange woman. David Kogan (writer, producer, director), Maurice Tarplin (as "The Traveler"), Robert A. Arthur (writer). 1/2 hour. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

10:30 Inner Sanctum. December 18, 1945. CBS net. "The Undead". Sponsored by: Lipton Tea, Lipton Soup. A woman's husband is the thirstiest bloodsucker this side of the "Vampire State Building." Happy New Year, Vision! We’ve been at this for quite a while now. I can’t remember how many years we’ve been hanging out here with you on Sunday evenings. I still look forward to it each week. :-)

You had a good trip? I’m sure you’re glad to be home. It’s foggy here with my usual doing-laundry Sunday. We might have leftovers for dinner. Whatchoo got?

Hey Gina, it has been a while, just did a rough investigation and it seems we’ve been at this, at least, since 2010. Amazing.

The trip was great. ATL is a nightmare of an airport IMO. But Atlanta-ians are kind.

I’m relaxing and will reheat some steak for dinner. Scored some awesome cookbooks for Christmas and will keep you updated...

Very good! Cookbooks are cool, but recipes are a lot of work and ingredients. HA!

I hate airports. Even small ones.

Agreed.

That pork recipe from last week/thread is easy, you have to try it.

The whole recipe link actually has a picture of Chef John’s face, which I’ve not seen before. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pork-Tenderloin-Diablo/Detail.aspx

Here's a picture of the radio--not THE radio, but one of the same models from the 1937-1938 run--that we're looking at buying from an antique mall. A Sears Silvertone 4789. The one we're checking out is in good condition, but we don't yet know how much of it works. Keith can fix it, though.

The dial is presets.

It looks like it’s all there, but you have to assume none of it works. That’s my negotiating leverage.

Nice piece of furniture though.

So you dial a station, and each hole of the dial is a preset? What are the presets labeled?

Yes. What I like of most DN’s are the details. Most seem sad. Would have been cool if they included positive stories from time to time.
