Full Title: From real candles in the 1900s, a tinsel takeover in the '50s and drifts of fake snow drifts in the '60s - how trees have changed down the decades

For many, a Christmas tree is the most memorable aspect of their annual festive decorations.

The tree itself has been a part of holiday traditions for centuries, dating back to the late 16th century when the custom was first developed in Germany; but the way in which it has been trimmed has changed dramatically from year to year.

Here, we take a look back at some of the different Christmas tree styles over the past 110 years, showcasing varying decorative styles from the endless tinsel favored during the 1950s and fake snow-covered branches in the 1960s, to color-themed decorations in the 1990s and today's modern, wireless lights.

I was going to bake today but spent the day sick in bed. Been doing the fever/chills cycle since last night. My temp is 101 right now. Severe headache, “brain zaps” and likely a kidney infection along with my other health issues. UGH.

Might get the Cream cheese pound cake done tomorrow. This is the recipe I use - http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/winning-cream-cheese-pound-cake - very dense the way I like it. Spread some butter on it and put it on the griddle to brown it like a grilled cheese.

Probably won’t get the Triple dark chocolate cherry cheesecake done - I use a mix of recipes or the Cream Puff cake done.

***I remember my dad telling me when he was 8 years old (circa 1920’s), their candle-lit Christmas tree caught fire and his father had to throw it outside in the snow.***

Even worse, near where my dad was born...Babbs Switch. They had moved to Branson Colorado or they would have been at that school house.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbs_Switch_fire

I was near there not long ago looking for family graves in the Hobart cemetery. I was surprised to so see many graves with ALL THE SAME DATE OF DEATH, the date of the BABBS SWITCH FIRE!

Bubble lights and wax stencils. I remember them very well. Every family member had his or her own unique personal ornament. Those who have passed on still get to celebrate Christmas with us through them.

As an expression of love even the cheap trinkets will do very nicely, thank you, and to hell with the mockery. The mockery is beginning to make me angry, and that won't do for Christmas. Bless all here.

I got really tired of putting up a Christmas tree and then taking it down and putting all the ornaments away. So a few years ago I decided to do something different and then say good bye to the tradition.

I bought 5 Christmas trees of different sizes. I put them all into my dining room but the only decoration was a large spool of Christmas ribbon wound around them and connecting them together. I put down white sheets for snow underneath them and that was it.

It looked fantastic, my own grove of trees inside my house. That was my fair well to Christmas trees and I haven't had one since.

This year we put up a small Nativity on the kitchen table and have a small (2') tree with little decorations sitting on the table in front of the living room window. A sting of blue lights gives a nice glow.

It's a break from the whole house decorations of the past, but staying simple helps remember the real reason.

We had a tree like that when I was a little kid. We gave it to my grandparents when we moved up to a 7' green artificial tree.

I might still have the color wheel in the attic.

I see reading is not your first skill. Reread the post, you will notice the asterisks around the statement, meaning it came from a different post by the person (PROCON) I was posting to.

WOW!!! Touchy.

First-I was just trying to have a little fun with wordage.

Second-When one is quoting something, the usual practice is to use "quotation marks"
Also, when quoting something from a previous thread most people put the quote in italics. (as I did above)
I have never seen the asterisks used, so did not know what they signified.

take a half teaspoon of baking soda in water for your kidneys- tastes awful but it really invigorates he kidneys. You can put some sweetener in to help the taste.

Shhh, his dad was one heck of an intuitive ventriloquist. ;-)

Used to be that if you had a tree you had two people on guard, one with sand and one with water.

Viva the pre-lit artificial Christmas tree!

I have small white electric lights but I still put candles on the tree... but I only get a tree right before Christmas eve and as long as its been cold outside, they are still very fresh. We emigrated to the US from Germany, and so growing up my mum always put candles on the tree, and yes, small twigs would sometimes catch on fire.... you have to be very mindful :)
