“Notorious piracy website The Pirate Bay was taken offline yesterday, as part of a raid by Swedish authorities,” Electronista reports. “The server raid in Stockholm, which took place yesterday morning, is said to be performed as part of a large operation to protect intellectual property, with several servers and other computers seized for further examination by the police.”
“Yesterday’s event joins copious others in the history of The Pirate Bay where authorities have attempted to reduce piracy,” Electronista reports. “It also occurs just over a month after co-founder Fredrik Neij was arrested in Thailand, after fleeing Sweden following his 2009 copyright infringement conviction. In October, fellow co-founder Gottfrid Svartholm Warg was found guilty of ‘hacking and gross damage’ over incidents which took place in 2012.”

How does your residency in Tainan give you the license to steal Intellectual Property?
What does that have to do with supporting the theft of intellectual property? I've had friends PUT OUT OF BUSINESS by this crap because their hard work was stolen and given away free by pirates.
Your profile claims you're a strict constructionist, well so am I. . . and that includes Article 1, Section 8, Clause 8, establishing for authors and inventors limited time "exclusive" copyright and patent rights. The Constitution did not say, "except for when Pirates and Tainan want to use them." You seem to think they're whims. I don't. This IS strict constructionalism, Tainan. Live what you profess.
And every nation except for certain rogue states, such as North Korea, give reciprocity to copyright laws. Anarchy is not necessarily a good thing. So P*ss off yourself.
So anything that helps LAW BREAKERS, Constitutional law breakers, lawbreakers pushing an anti-property rights, everything belongs to the common-pool, socialist agenda, is good? Pardon me, MrShoop, but I cannot grasp that concept of a member of a conservative website supporting that merely because they don't like some of the people the crooks are hurting.
Another Freeper snidely claimed in a Freepmail to me that he found it ironic I was "gleefully" decrying piracy on a website that essentially USES copyrighted material without being willing to license it. . . But he's ignoring FreeRepublic's constant policing to assure compliance with the Fair Use doctrine and to comply with the wishes of the copyright holders even beyond that legal requirement.
I told him if he didn't like the way the site was run to avoid being hit by the door on his way out because he's free to leave.
FreeRepublic has already been down the litigation pathway on this. News aggregation and commentary sites are legal. I think they help the source sites in that they help drive readers to them that they ordinarily wouldn't have and thus provide clicks for their advertisers.
FreeRepublic is not in completion with the source sites for advertising dollars because FR is a non-profit site. JR has other superior motives for running this site.
Also, MrShoop, one cannot USE the Internet in today's world without accidentally infringing copyright in someway. Caches on our devices contain copies of thousands of copyrighted images and writings. . . all of them there without the explicit permission of the copyright owners. Is that actionable? Who knows? A creative lawyer might find a way to monetize it.
My office is dunned regularly by Getty Images for $1695 for use of one of their images. . . which we never used. Why? Eight years ago a salesman for a graphics artist came into my office and tried to sell us on how well they could spiff up our web site. He brought up a website with our name on it they'd made up to impress me. . . Looked nice, has a nice picture across the top of a mountain scene but nothing we'd use, we are located nowhere near any mountains, being California's Central Valley. I said, "Thanks, not interested."
Four years later we get the first of the letters from Getty with a copy of that web page they claim is theirs. . . and demand for $4000 to license the stupid mountain photo which they claim we are using for commercial purposes, since their web crawler found it on the Internet with our office name and phone number on it four years ago. . . and then cited a big block of boiler plate, official legal language about they did not have to prove knowledge we knew the photo was copyrighted or belonged to Getty, but just the act, etc. was evidence of the crime, and pay up or see them in Federal court. I called them and told them what occurred. They didn't care. Our name, our benefit. Our bill. Pay up. I said: my money, my answer: no, your problem. And hung up.
Over the years Getty escalated to collection agency and drooped the price to $1695., so I talked to the collection agency to tell them "no". . . And got suspicious and did some investigating and found out the collection agency is. . . Getty. I've told them No, no, no, no, and HELL NO. This last few months they've escalated to an attorney, threatening a Federal lawsuit. . . also Getty. So I gave it to my on-staff attorney. It's gotten quite amusing.
Turns out Getty is famous for this. They put photos on free sites with limited, expiring licenses that amateurs use on their web sites, and when the "free" license expires, hits them for high license costs after waiting a couple of years to build up penalty charges . . . some Getty images don't even have visible copyright notices, they're buried in the metadata. . . and their crawlers can identify one or part of a Getty image no matter what's been done to it, no matter how much it's been cropped or altered! Some just average John and Jane Does have been hit for use of a Getty image on Facebook or their family blog for up to five Grand! According to everything I've read, they've never gotten a conviction in court. . . They're deathly afraid of losing.

People still use pirate bay? What next, go and get music from napster? Or wait, even better, lets use a vcr tape and copy a movie from Blockbuster or record music off the radio with a cassette tape.
