Homework is ridiculous. My 1st grader gets hw almost every night. Growing up I don’t remember having any until at least 4th/5th grade.

It’s reasonable to expect a couple hours of homework a night. Kids are usually out of school by around 2:30pm.

i had homewrk in 2nd grade. usually handwriting stuff. i had homework in elementary school. didn’t spend hours a night doing it.

what i didn’t have is the internet, my own smartphone, managed play schedules, and unlimited tv time.

i also had teachers who taught properly using effective methods. and was not indoctrinated by pc bullcrap. i played kickball, dodge ball, drew war battles at school doodling, had a pocketknife with me, and had snowball fights and where the playground was plowed, played king of the mountain. none of us were on ritalin.

If you pay attention, you might find, like I did, that most of the real academic study happens in homework. They are busy with nonsense in the classroom. Some assignments will show you the degree of the teacher’s and textbooks’ stupidity.

Homework in first grade should consist of reading, drill and kill arithmetic tables, spelling words, and practice printing.....and none of that should take more than 10 or 15 minutes for each item
